Swapping a Ruger 77 extractor for a Williams Model 70 extractor.

Yesterday I finally got mad enough at my Ruger extractor (what a piece of junk) to attempt to fit a Model 70 Williams machined steel extractor to it. It fit and functioned well on the bolt and in the receiver, but my Model 70 extractor was a standard and the Ruger is a magnum so that meant some modification. All went well and it has improved function ten fold. If anyone is interested, it seems to be a viable option.

That's good info, Chuck. I would never have even thought to try. It actually looks like it fits the Ruger bolt better than on the new Model 70. The groove is too far ahead on the Model 70's I have had in the shop. One was bad enough that there was almost no primary extraction. BACO denied any such issue existed. Perhaps I was hallucinating. Regards, Bill

I had noticed the issue a month ago. I removed the extractor and gave the tail a bend and that helped. However, shooting it Friday the same issue was rearing it’s head and cartridges weren’t making it to the ejector during extraction. The were falling out before then. The extractor was losing the tension I’d given it earlier. I was a bit disheartened as I’d already called Ruger warranty in Quebec to see about a new extractor, to no avail. At least for several months.

With the extractor in hand as I sat at the bench I had the thought to try a Winchester one. I have several and they looked similar so why not. I had nothing to lose. I figured that the chances of them fitting would be remote. But it fit. Perfectly.

Dude, resize those pictures; all I see is bench clutter; no extractors.

Chuck very useful post! ( I see the phots fine and your bench is tidier than mine!)

I am having a hell of a time getting my Ruger M77 Mark ii to feed 350 Rem mag. (Grrrr.)

Thanks for the post. Brian

I put a MKII 350 barrel on a tang safety long action, and put that into a boat paddle stock.
It feeds flawlessly;
I recommend you take your mag box and bend the lips to make it feed.

Thanks dpcd, Do you mean bend them inward? Makes sense. Thanks, Brian

Great information! Just to be clear, is the rifle you fitted the new extractor to an original tang-safety 77, or the MK 2 model? I am only (somewhat) familiar with the original tang safety models.

Thanks,
John

That don't do anything. I have a Mac.
Tang safety Rugers are actually push (smooth) feed extractors; and the bolts and extractors are different than the MKII.

Copy the picture to your computer and view it in any size you like. This site is the only site I deal with that needs photos resized. I’m not bothering with it.

To reduce the image in a browser window on a Mac press Command -

To increase it, press Command +

The command key is just to the right of the spacebar.

Thanks for the tip about the extractor. Very helpful. Mine, however, works fine. Is it likely to break or something>

I'm not bothering with it either; most pictures here on AR can be seen fine, on my computer.
Is your Ruger extractor likely to break?
Definitely not. They are very durable.
