Top drawer mauser action makers:

Gottfried Prechtl (DE)
Karl Heinz Ritterbusch (DE)
Granite Mountain Arms - Mike Rodin (USA)
Fred Wells (Prescott, Arizona, USA)
Hartmann & Weiss (uses or has used Blackburn bottom metal by the way)
Stuart Satterlee

Based on the work I have seen, I would put Gentry into the 2nd tier.

Friends-

Back to the original question of what to build; I would agree with all of the other posters who called for a return to the Mod. 98 c-ring, be it a G33-40 or a large ring all or either with a Model 70 three position safety.

Question is what can be done to improve the lock-time of the 98 design? Now that to me would be a real design improvement.

May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back.

a few of the pre-war magnum mausers did not have the thumb slot,so a new one sans slot shouldnt offend us purists.

It hasn't been mentioned but Matt Williams at Williams Mfg has most of the deisgn work done for their 98 clone to be released... I doubt anything from Germany will be able to compete price-wise, Deutsch labor being what it is.

Brad

If I am not mistaken, Karl Webber and his outfit are located in either Washington State or Oregon, Not Germany.

In addition, I believe that Mr. Williams design is a Model 70 design. Maybe he will see this and come on and comment.

By the way, many years ago, Pete Grizel made a small ring mauser action for a year or two. I believe it was pattered after the g.33/40 and had a 3 position safety. I have seen photos but never one in person. Has anyone ever seen one of these? Owned one?
