I bedded a HS Stock last night and wanted to ask how some of you fellas were doing your barrel channels just foward of the lug. The last few rifles I've bedded, I let the bedding material go foward of the recoil lug a bit. Probably only a 1/2" to 3/4" or so and the remainder of the channel is open for the barrel to be centered a floated.

How much past the lug do you guys let your material go?

Do you dam off the channel right at the lug or alittle foward?

Do you think it has any ill effects if only a tiny 1/2" or so bit of the barrel is bedded?

in my opinion, it's nothing.. I have spot eded, full length, floated the barrel, glassed the action, the action and barrel shank, and even miz in glassing or not the bottommetal.. it all works well. The benchrest guys showed us you could when with any bedding style

I was always taught that the bedding should go at least to and slightly forward of the center balance point of the rifle.

To float my barrel from the glass I always tape it so I have around 1/16 inch clearance, but I stop the tape 2 inches from the receiver. The action is glassed with the recoil lug 'free' at the sides which I have covered and trimmed with tape also.
This is an accurate method for me, but there are certainly other ways of skinning the same cat. I doubt if there is a measureable, best method even with the bench shooter crowd.

I've usually see the bedding forward of the recoil lug out to where the chamber ends.

I personally don't feel it will have any ill effects since it's so little ahead of the lug, I just wanted to se if a few of you more experienced fellas had seen any problems w/ it.

On another note this was my first go w/ PC-7 paste, our local supply house carries PC-7 and PC-11. It's like Marine Tex(probably the same stuff) and dries a real dark almost blackish grey. I certainly like the paste more than the thinner stuff I've used. It has a 1 hour work time which is nice IMO. Any of you used the PC-7?
