I use the Mohawk Non-grain-raising dye; same thing I use to tone my stocks. I'll use a mahogany color. Then I go over that with black shoe polish, the Kiwi paste kind, then a coat of wax.

I am sure that Laurel Mountain stains will stain leather any color you want.

TAndy leather always has plenty of dyes to choose from and in all colors A good final finish is "saddle lac" or siilar

tandy has "antique" finishes - i think that's what it's still called - that gives a pleasing-to-me uneven finish, looks like a little wear and age on it

I ordered Black and Mohogany Dye from Tandy. I'm not sure which I'm going to like best, probably the black, I think, as the wood on this rifle is dark.

Stu,
do a couple test pieces first - you can change the results by how smooth you lay it on, how long you leave it on, and how you wipe it off - and how many coats you use to make it darker/sink into the leather better

Horse medicine called Jensen Violate is a great wood dye Ive used on stocks, Its sourced from walnut..I use a piece of wood from a stock and determine the color I want then proceed, folks you might give it a try...Its a bit darker than Alkenet root and has a purple tinge at some point I like the color,,Apparently it was used in Britten at one time?????

Its wallnut juice and Iodine, great for Jock Itch in that texas 125 degree Big Bend country but beware its hot as hell for 15 minutes and only tough cowboys can handle it. So which of you has the balls to try it on wood and skin!
