Found a carcano in the store that was the type that was used by the africa corps so it is chambered in 7.92mm mauser. How easy would it be to put a new barrel on it since the rim diameter would be correct for lots of cartridges other than the 6.5 which is supposed to be smaller. My idea would be in a .22-250, no scope, just some iron sights. Second would be do I have to use those stripper clips to make it function properly (the mannlicher system?)

I had one of them years ago in 6.5x52, they are not really worth spending any money on. Save your dollars and buy a 22-250. Or if you really want to do up a military rifle, get a Mauser 98 action or a 96.

I would not TRUST the carcano action to hold a .22/250. It might, but why risk your face with such a piece of crap?? Frowner

I used mine that way too but the tomatoes was too much for it and it bent.

In all sincereity.....rebarreling a Carcano is like having sex with your mother-in-law. It was a bad idea to start with, was a bad idea while it was happening, and was even worse afterwards.

Hm. There are only a few cartridges to which a Carcano could be sensibly rebarrelled. The most notable and practical ones are the 7,62x39 and the .35 Rem.

More details on rebarrelling can be found on the Carcano website, where the whole matter is treated in some extent.

They may be junk, but didn't your own gov't find that they were remarkably accurate, with a high rate of fire, just a few years ago??

Should I believe the Government agencies, with all their resources, or should I believe the opinions of those who post here?

Just a thought...

Where have you been?? Of course you should believe the opinions posted here before any government "analysis"! Especially when a president was assassinated.

Now see what you guys did! You bursted my bubble. In the fifties and sixties I sporterized a 6.5 Carcano folding bayonet carbine into a rather attractive hunting rifle. I only killed a couple mule deer with it but one was a 6 point (western) that went about 300 pounds. Another Carcano carbine I sporterized and rechambered to a 6.5 X 55. Prudent? Maybe not but I killed at least 2 mulies with it also.

However the advise you have received so far is correct. Unless you just like screwing around as I some times do, rebarreling and sporterizing a Carcano isn't going to yeild you a great piece of hardware. Silk purse sows ear syndrome. thumbdownroger

The Carcano is not one of the very best military rifles ever built...but, within its design parameters, it is not junk. In North Africa, the Italian Army & the German wehrmacht certainly gave Monte & the Brits all they could handle 'til allied airpower made gasoline very difficult for the Axis to come by.

Downgrading the rifle by those who have not extensively used it kinda reminds me of what I used to read in our US newspapers after Pearl Harbor but before Guadalecanal (SP?). They were all telling us what an unintelligent, sub-human, inferior fighting man the japanese soldier was, and how his little ".25 caliber" rifle wasn't powerful enough to even seriously injure a healthy American boy....all of which turned out to be pure propaganda bullshit.

Those who think the Carcano is a reasonably good action had better take a good look at how the striker assembly is retained in the bolt. If you suffer a case head separation or even a pierced primer you may wear the striker assembly through your eye socket. The assembly is only retained by a VERY SMALL projection on the striker. I bought one in 1966 at a discount outlet for $12.00. Shot it a few times until I saw a warning and retired it to be my drill and tap dummy while learning to be a gunsmith.
Just my .02 but better safe than sorry.

Do it right the first time.

Bob: you have obviously yourself not looked at any Carcano striker assembly since 1966, as your posting shows.

What you wrote is factually not correct; an old wives' tale in plainer words. Has been refuted for a long time, by Dick Hobbs as well as on the Carcano website.
