The .308 and .243 use the same standard length 700 action. Some people interpret the S in SA to mean short...others interpret it to mean Standard. The 700’s only come in two lengths, the one above and the long action.

Are you just wanting to put together an accurate rifle or you want to get into Benchrest competition. If you want to be serious about BR you may as well forget about sporting rifle actions and triggers. The 6ppc caliber is the top dog all the rest of them are all, also haven there. To get your feet wet find a used BR sporter weight rifle (10.5 lbs) in 6ppc and practice with it. Get a proven action like a Panda, BAT or Viper. Most used BR rifles are sold when they only shoot 1/4" groups at that rate they are not competetive anymore. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

FWIW, a friend built a 22BR on a Rem short action for coyotes. Fantastically accurate rifle but feeds like crap. The box is way too long and the rounds tend to nose-dive. "Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

tiggertate. You are right the BR case is designed for single loading in an action that has the mag box blocked off. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

Tiggertate, did you or your friend read THIS article?? I don't know how much of a problem the (non-)feeding is to your friend, but just in case it is a problem... - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon...
