So, I had an interesting one today. One of my customers came in with a screw driver poke hole, completely through the palm of his hand. This is not a new thing to me, but most of the time the guys don't shove them completely through. The downside is that he wouldn't let me take a picture of his hand. It's pretty groddy! It seems he was trying to remove the extractor from his Marlin 336 by following a video that a kid had posted on line and things sort of got out of hand. I watched the video with him and I can see how he would have stabbed himself. I'm surprised the kid on the video didn't do it too. So I decided to do a short video on how to remove and install them.

Right in the bottom and out through the top. I guess his wife drove him to the hospital with the handle sticking out of the palm of his hand. She used to be a nurse and had the common sense not to let him pull it out on his own. I also think his inspiration and desire to DIY had taken a downturn at that point and he was much more receptive to letting professionals handle things from there. He said it didn't hurt going in and they froze it before taking it out. But I guess it hurt like hell that night after it swelled up to the size of a cantaloupe and started turning red and praple. A little bit of blood poisoning tends to do that.

popcorn I think he was just getting the hang of it and was actually getting on top of it myself ! But who am I to say. Some people just have no stamina or perseverance. I know guys that would have ended up in traction before giving up and quitting. he he he he

That has to hurt like the guy (dealer) who shot himself through the left hand with a 32 auto, about 50 feet away from me at the Princeton gun show. The police took him out very quickly; he was standing there with a white handkerchief wrapped around it, but he was leaking somewhat.

GORILLA GLUE, Doug. Superglue is yesterdays news today. Everyone that's worth anything at Holly-Hobby-Central and the 5-&-Dime does Gorilla glue these days.

That's where it's at Bubba!

Yeah I had a customer who bought a Glock 23 from me several years ago. He came in a couple of months later and confessed he shot himself through the hand with it during disassembly. Round went between the middle and ring fingers of his left hand. Soft tissue only and no lasting impairment. That was one lucky fellow. A dealer I knew did the same thing with a .45 auto. Blew his middle finger slam off. He was a surgeon and had to go through a lot of therapy to be able to do surgery again.

I was always taught in First Aid classes with something like that is to leave the screw driver in the wound.
Don't know if it was true but I heard that Guy Steve Erwin(animal guy fron Asussie) would have lived if the barb from the sting ray was left in. WHO KNOWS !

Without trying to start a war with the upside downers. But, I'm really surprised that Steve Irwin didn't die of (STUPID) long before he encountered the ray! That guy was decidedly not firing on all cylinders !

I heard that too, but it is hard to think clearly when you are under water with a 12 inch barb through your heart.
Another true story; my fist job was XO of a Basic Training Company. One cold rainy spring day on the range, one of the boneheads. (trainees) came to the fire barrel where I and a couple of Drill Sergeants were "planning training". He said, "Drill Sergeant, my gun went off". He held out his left hand and his index finger was a black piece of hamburger with bone splinters in it; the stupid maggot had placed his finger on the muzzle of his M16 and fired it. I visited him in the hospital a week later and the doctors actually had spent time making him a short stub out of what was left. Needless to say, we gave him what he wanted; immediate discharge.

SpeerChucker,

The proper spelling is "groty" or ""grotie" with a "t" not a d . As in short for grotesque.

If it is really bad you can say "grotie to the max"

Mike

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Wrong, wrong, wrong and just WRONG on so many levels. I have never actually seen the words: "groty" or ""grotie"

The Urban dictionary however describes: "Groddy" as follows;

GRODDY by Rod Henrickson, on Flickr

So it would seem that both my usage and spelling of the word are correct!

Don't mess with me, I speak fluent HILLBILLY! LOL

If you have to ask which Valley...I am appalled.

The term originated in the Valley in 70s and it is grotie.

Clearly, revisionist history by liberals.

So to give you the benefit of the doubt I looked up "Groti" It's only reference is Lithuanian and it means: "one who plays a musical instrument". So then I did a search for "Grotie". I read the first definition and then started to snicker when I read the second. I think you better read it for yourself! LMAO ROFF

I suppose it was, unscrew your hand from the wall? Or, hold a potted plant in the other hand and hope that the construction foreman and interior designer could pass you off as one of the homes fitments?

Notice if you will Tom, how I used the word "FITMENT" correctly in a gunsmithing forum! That's probably the first time in history that has ever been done! I'm not only taking a cookie for that one, but I'm also writing it on the wall !

Had a Hispanic drywall framer hardnail his hand to the slab with Ramset Trackfast once. His foreman showed up with a prybar to get him unstuck. Never seen an olive skinned man go ghost white like that.
