2 position safety using a 3 position safety

I am aware of how the winchester 3 position type safety works, and how it has been adapted by many makers for use on Mauser actions.

What I wonder is whether there would be any problems using those 3 position safeties as 2 position safeties by not installing the spring and pin that make them a 3 position safety.

I have wondered about this in the past.

If you don't have the spring and pin in place it wouldn't hold in the safe or fire position, or so I would think.

What about having a custom lever made without the middle detent hole? Or you could have the middle hole welded and re-machined.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

as Jason said the pin and spring are needed to keep the lever from flopping around and and make the detents work. But you could always just file the pin shorter. Can't see why you wouldn't just cut the halfmoon in the bolt and use it as is though. But shorting the pin is a common way to convert the 2 position mauser safeties to not lock the bolt when in safe.

If you have a MKX order a Dakota and don't ask for a longer pin. The factory pin isn't long enough to lock the bolt. They make a longer pin you have to ask for if you are working on a MKX, Daly etc.

As usual just my $.02

Ah Ramrod, I was hoping that somebody was going to mention the Mark X becasue the Mark X and actions like it are the reason I asked the question.

I hate those trigger safeties on Mark X actions.
And I really like 3 position safeties. I have purchased many of them, but always ended up selling them because I could not justify using them.

And of couse, one could, like Les Brooks did, take the shroud off of the Mark X and add a military shroud and then istall a 2 position safety.

But what I was thinking about was having a local guy who is pretty good with a small tig welder weld up a Mark X shroud so that it would take a lever like those used on the the three position safeties. Then, install the lever and use it as a two position safety.

Don Markey, you are the guy that fiddles with all of these ideas. What do you think? Would it work?

Simpliest way I've found to do away with the MKX safety is pick up a FN left hand lever and shroud.

kevin.. you mean like a dakota/gentry style?

take out the plunger/pin and trim it down.. belt sander will work.

then you have a position 1, 2, 2 ..

My Mark X's have M70-style but 2-position safeties sourced from Jim Kobe...

Kevin it would work but if you want a 2 position why not just get one from me, Kobe, or one of the others that fit them up. IMO they look more mauserly anyway.

I have had that kind of safety before on 98 mausers and they are fine there, but I want to keep the original look of the Mark X.

Just out of curiosity, I suppose one would have to know the exact caming distance for any particular lever and then figure out exactly where to drill the hole for it. I suppose a mill with a DRO would be best for that?

DROs are nice but it all can be done with handwheels and indicators. I'm to cheap to buy them for my equipment.
