A friend of mine is looking to have a nice big bore built. Either a .404 Jeff or .375 H&H. He sent me a picture of a blank he's found at a vender and wanted my opinion on it which I have given. The rifle will be "high end". Not a cost no object rifle, but certainly not a off the shelf gun either. I've given my critique of it and though it would be interesting to get yours.

Here are the pics. Comments please.

Terry-

I'd give it two thumbs up!!!

Terry, I'm guessing you like it too given the mineral streaking.

Where, may I ask, did he purchase the blank?

It looks okay to me (FWIW). It will be quarter-sawn through the magazine and grip. Let's see what the stockmakers think.

Hi Mark, I'm not sure who the vender is or the price.

Well...I know as much about stocks as I do about brain surgery but I have te flu and am bored so here is my version of a layout

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Terry, I am the last person you would want an opinion from but heres mine anyway.
I like the looks of the stock but I don't care for the layout and the grip area.
Then again, my opinion carrys about as weight as a bucket of air.

My opinion isn't worth much either, but In my humble opinion if the total job is going to be more than $3500 I would look for a different piece of wood. Its a very nice piece of wood. But its not a spectacular piece of wood, and if the rifle is high end I would want something a bit better in term of layout and in terms of matching figure on both sides.

I was of the same opinion. I think I remember him saying the blank was in the $1100 range.

My experience is limited -which may be overstating my capabilities- but I could buy one hell of a blank in Europe with that money! It looks good but not great.

I like the right side but, the left side leaves me lacking. Nice blank but not one I would buy for that price range.

As usual just my $.02

IMHO $1100 is highway robbery for that blank.
The two sides don't match. Is that a Knot on the left lower side? I think he could keep shopping, I've bought better for a lot less................DJ

So, David, do you think our guy Adam, could fix him up with better? How was the trip back to SL? Thanks for giving Sue and Jake a ride up to Tulsa. Call me in a couple of days. I think the blanks from Lexus and Preslick should be here.

If that was my blank I'd use it for a DG rifle.

Personally It's a beautiful piece and IMO the wrist area in not too figured to be lacking strength.

Before He buys that stick you should have him check out these:

http://www.luxusgunstock.com/sess/utn;jsessionid=154417...ata/index.shopscript

http://www.wood4guns.com/Rifle_Blanks.html
(especially 88-90 for 700-800)

http://www.oldworldwalnut.com/circassian2.html

We've not yet bought any wood from the latter two but I like some of the wood they've pictured. We've bought a dozen or so blanks from Adam @ Luxus Walnut. Adam is really fun to talk too, I think he loves wood as much or more than I do and he's treated us great so far.
I'd Try Luxus first...................DJ

Terry, at that price I would pass. Numbers 88, 89 and 90 on the dehaan site (wood4guns) listing above are far better. In fact they look like a hell of a buy.

At the Rambouillet show this last weekend some VERY nice Turkish walnut blanks were for sale for 800 Euros, around $960. They were not the most expensive of all the blanks, but the most expensive of all those appropriate for a big bore. For a lighter rifle there were a couple with lots of swirls and burls that were also a little more expensive.
