Just a quick update here. I was contacted by my Senator's office this morning. Apparently back in December, State Dept replied to the Senators' letter with some squishy mumbo jumbo explaining that the July letter was supposed to help people "self -determine" whether to register or not.. we agreed that the July letter was very unambiguous and that this recent letter seemed to be a bit of backtracking on the issue, for whatever reason.

Anyway, Senator Daines of Montana is in the lead on this, and I was told to expect some action on the issue in the next couple of months. The most likely outcome seems to be that the oversight of firearms will be transferred to the Commerce Dept (which already oversees shotguns), which will render the registration and fee payment to the State Dept. unnecessary.

So it looks like we can anticipate some good news here.

A good job is sometimes just a series of expertly fixed fark-ups.
Let's see.... is it 20 years experience or is it 1 years experience 20 times?
And I will have you know that I am not an old fart. I am a curmudgeon. A curmudgeon is an old fart with an extensive vocabulary and a really bad attitude.

Is this going to effect ITAR compliance?

ECR (Export Control Reform) has been dragging on since 2009. Firearms and ammunition were/are the only items left to be 'transferred' from The State Dept. to the Commerce Dept. Last I heard, the move was up for public comment. The comment time period has past, but that's about all I know at this point. I suppose a call to the National Shooting Sports Foundation would be the place for more info on the statis update of where it is at. With all the investigations and allegations flying around, it's pretty easy to see why some things are moving so slowly. If you happen to have a Conservative Rep or Senator you might get some answers there, also.

I have checked the NRA site for several months and have not found anything of the repeal of Obama Orders July 2016 making all of us gunsmith working on hunting guns loose our way of making an honest living. If I understand the order it states that anyone giving out info on how to make a part or write articles on the subject is in trouble with ITAR. I am an old man now and I was in gunsmithing full time before the 1967 laws.

The NRA is having lots of problems at this time within its self. I would hope it can get their act together and help us get this Obama Order of July 2016 appealed. I taught in some of the NRA summer programs at TSJC back in "92-94.

"Manufacturers, exporters, gunsmiths and others who are currently required to register under the ITAR and pay a $2,250 registration fee but who have no involvement with the items that remain on the U.S.M.L. will no longer be required to register with DDTC or pay an annual fee. There is no registration fee under the EAR and no fee for an export license (in contrast to the $250/license fee under the ITAR."

That is the best articles on the controls that I have seen since the ITAR came down on gunsmiths.

I have spent time this morning studying the links and everyone should read these articles.

Thanks Smokin Joe

Well since the fee was BS then I think all who paid the fee should be re-imbursed.

Just to add , Bobster,,,, the DDTC is sitting on Millions of $$$$$ collected as "registration fees". Just how many other government agencies have "money in the bank", collected in a similar fashion. Every agency needs operating money, but when they end up with overages like this it says the fee is too high. It is money, that belongs to "The People", horded by a government agency. Just another example of "the swamp" that seems out of control. I just found it on line,,,, $140,000,000 collected from fees, from those who never exported or even wanted to..
