Will any Mauser 98 bolt fit any 98 receivers? Paul Take Trophies - Leave Brass

Yes; occasionally one won't fit but that is rare. Meaning the standard 98 family; not intermediate, Kurz, mag. Tolerances among all the different makers were amazingly held. Come over and we can mix and match a hundred of them and see. Now, if you are doing this on rifles and not just bare actions, check headspace. Also, the original safeties operate correctly about 2/3rd of the time; too much going on there.

Well, yes, but no. If one doesn't care about cam timing, then yes. If one does care, then no. There are a myriad of other exclusions, variations, issues, etc. Tom mentioned safeties, there are also a myriad of other issues with interchangeability. To get a correct response, if you post what it is your trying to do, you'll find out if it will work. Yes, cam timing; now we are in Master level area. Most people have no idea what that is. And use non original bolts without any worry, because they usually work well enough. Come over and I'll show you what he means.

I had an Mexican Mauser receiver a few years ago, and I fitted a Intermediate bolt to it. Ok it dropped in and all was good UNTIL I went to lap the locking lugs to the receiver ring ?? they were not even touching ?? Seems the 3rd, ( safety Lug ) was long or the receiver recess was short. I had to remove .015" from the back of the safety lug so I could then lap in the front locking lugs to the receiver Had a Customers M98 action in last year. When you dry fired it the bolt would LOCK UP and I had to use a plastic mallet to open it Did that a couple of times and then tore down the bolt. Found out that a NEW Reproduction firing pin had been installed and the front cam edges were oversize and was binding inside the bolt A little bit of round file work and all was well After enough years you start to see a LOT of things about these Lovely Mauser actions Jim Wisner
