Question: aside from the bolt face and a new barrel what would be necessary to convert a 338 Win Mag to a 270? This would be in a LH Model 70 action. Thanks.

boltface would be wrong .. can go 270 to 338, but you'll likely have feeding issue .. simpler, faster, cheaper to sell 338, buy 270 ... you are looking at 300-500 for the job ..

It's a bugger when reversing the order. Kind of like wanting to change your house siding to a semi-transparent stain from years of paint. Possible, but what an ordeal.
What Jeffe said.

Converting it to 264 Win Mag or 7m Rem Mag is a lot easier. Even converting it to 270 Wsm would be easier.

Apparently there is more to this conversion than I thought initially. Being a lefty, and wanting a model 70 action - finding just what I want, when I can afford it, has been a bit frustrating. I know where I can get my hands on a model 70 lefty magnum action and was thinking that I could swing a conversion. I knew that the bolt face would have to be changed, however there must be much more involved than changing the bolt face and barrel. As you can tell, I have little or no knowledge of such things, but I am willing to learn. Thanks!

There is a hell of a lot involved in "changing the bolt face." Almost no one has ever done that operation. You would need to do some searchng to find someone who has done it to a M70 before. Definitely find a LH action in .270 or at least have the .473 " bolt face.

What is wrong with the 338? With lighter bullets and moderate loads, recoil can be the same as the 270. Trajectory will be close enough at hunting ranges. You might like it.

Thanks every one. There is way too much involved with a conversion of this type to make sense. Going to plan B - locate a lefty mod 70 in 270 (or same action length / bolt face), and save a lot of grief. Smiler
