A friend brought me his Winchester model 71 and asked me to re-blue the forend tip. By the strange way the color has worn I'm not sure that it was originally blued. Anyone here have experience bluing one of the these? Thanks

Put a magnet to it and make sure it has some carbon in it. Try some cold blue. If it is magnetic and will take cold blue, then I would think it should take regular caustic bluing. (invoke disclaimer here just in case)

On page 245 in Wilson's book, "Winchester, An American Legend " there are three examples of original 71's. All of the forend tips are blued, matching the rest of the bluing on the rifles.

Thanks, Malm. Just didn't want to drop it in there and have it disappear. Numrich's website says they have replacements just in case.

Actually carbon has nothing to do with it.....it's the presense of ferric (iron) that is needed to do most bluing. That's why the magnet is a good test. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Yeah I meant to say iron. That disclaimer is supposed to cover all that technical crap.

A good polished line, a pocket of cash and a nice car will do it too.
