I have a Brno 602 action (CZ550) which needs a bit of metal added in the feed ramp area to improve feeding. Are there any recommendations as to adding a bit of weld. Will the heat of welding cause any problems with the strength of the steel.

you can weld all over the action but don't get the receiver ring hot.....like 400 deg F. That's enough to draw temper in the ring.

I've welded them and kept a water spray on the ring to keep the temper from being drawn.

I also recommend only TIG welding as you can add metalk quickly before the heat can migrate very far.

weld, no.. not the front ring...

I would actually suggest you do a test on this, before you get started. build up thereever it needs weldament, with epoxy, and shape, then test feed..

silversolder? sure enough, if it work!!

I don't know, but I would think you could have it annealed, do all of the work on it, and then have it reheat treated to the same specs.

Vapodog. I will check in with the gunsmith and see if he has a TIG welder or I could find someone local to do it. Is a TIG welder cooler than a MIG welder?

you can tig weld on the action but the welder damn well better know what he is doing. Mig will be to hot. use some heat blocker around the weld & that will keep the heat from interfering with the hardening. Most gunsmiths are not capable of really good welds (sorry fellows but I've got 2 national champs in the shop and know what they can do) Use an air hardening filler rod, and do just a bit of pre and post heating.

There is no way you can weld on the feed ramp and not effect the lower locking lug on the other side. The only thing you can do is weld it, anneal it, and have it reheat treated. Of course the action will need to be retrued.

You could silver solder it like jeffeosso said.

I shorten and weld square bridges on Mausers all of the time using this method, but I have them magnafluxed to look for cracks before I continue with the action. It all depends on how pure the steel is. I imagine that the Brno action is new enough to have good steel.

I know I Silver solder with heat treated metal protected with submersion in water.

I think a TIG welder told me he does the same thing with TIG.

Only the part to be welded is sticking out of the water.

Don't do it! I can't see how that could be done w/o anealing the bottom lug of the action, and annealing/re-heatreating could warp the action.

I'd build up with a metal filled epoxy.

Paul H, yes reheat treating can warp the action. It usually doesn't move that much, but I did have a 1917 Eddystone that turned into a pretzel. It just has to do with the amount of stress that is in the action. I really don't see any problems with Brno action, but it is a risk you take.

After I thought about the problem, I would probably insert a milled piece that is the size of the area needed to be welded and drill and counter bore the back side for a screw to hold the piece in. This way you can't see it and you don't risk damaging the action.

I think if it is too risky ,I might be better off buying another action in 300 win or 375 as it has more meat around the feed ramp and we wont have to build them up. I could then use the existing action for my working/play gun.
