Trying to get the safety lever off a voere imperial model 2165. I believe the rifle is actually a Santa Barbara mauser. Any assistance is appreciated thank you.
Another question. Is chambering a cartridge from the magazine only the proper way to load or can one be placed in the chamber and the claw extractor ba allowed to ride over the rim. Thank you.

If the extractor was designed or modified to function that way. Otherwise, feed from a loaded magazine.

Yes, some commercial Mauser extractors will snap over the rim but I wouldn't load that way deliberately. To make it happen, more has been ground off the 'hook', which probably weakens it. I have had some sluggish ejection with my Whitworth 7mm mag and a friend says that may also be related to the modified extractor.

Many years ago, I had a Santa Barbara action barreled to 6 mm Rem. Since I often used it as a single shot, I carefully stoned the extractor until it would slip over the rim. I never had a failure to extract--just proceed very carefully if you make this modification, and Sambar's advice is good if it's primary a hunting rifle and especially if a follow-up shot is anticipated.
