I just picked up a Rem M14 at an auction, it has a tang sight mounted but the original rear sight is missing and I'd like to replace it. The rear of the barrel has a dovetail cut into it and then behind that there's another cut across the barrel top about 1/8" wide. It looks as though some part of the original rear sight sat down in it. Anyone have more info about this or a lead on a replacement? No go at Numerich.

I think your looking for a Rem. wheel site. Adjustments were made by turning the elevator wheel. An example on this link http://www.gunsamerica.com/976890326/Guns-For-Sale/Gun-...5CAL_WHEEL_SIGHT.htm kk alaska

I made this inquiry on the Remington Society's BBS and found out that all guns were cut for the thumbwheel sight like the one in your link, a #117-1/2, but only the early guns used it. Later guns still had the cut but went to a 107-1/2 as the standard rear sight, however the 117-1/2 was still available as an option, as were many other different rears, including some folding leafs. I think the folding leaf may be my best option for versatility. Thanks, Rob
