Friends-

What options are available in doing a "Cock-on-Open" conversion for M-1917/P-14 Enfield actions?

For example, I think Dayton-Trister has a kit but, does it force you to use their trigger?

I am planning a project and I want to use a Timney trigger with the original safety but, i want to convert the action to cock-on-open.

I am guessing, but, I'll bet there are other ways of performing the conversion. If you could post, send me the appropriate reference materials for such a conversion, or direct me to the appropriate reference materials for these conversions, I would be greatly obliged.

Thank you in advance.

May the wind be in your face and the sun at your back.

I've had it done twice and both times the action refused to detonate a primer.....I needed to install a stiffer spring as well.

Mark;

I have only used the speedlock/cock-on-opening conversion from Numrich/Gun Parts in New York. They are relatively inexpensive, the last one I bought about three years ago was about $20.00 as I recall. The cocking piece they use is cast steel and as such has mold parting lines on it that need to be cleaned up. I never tried any after market triggers with them but suppose they would work just fine. I prefer to rework the original triggers on Enfields used for dangerous game rifles as I feel they are then ultra reliable. The conversions use a very heavy spring to speed up the firing pin fall and not one, that I have used, has had any problems with ignition. The rifles involved, that I remember, were four 375 H&H's and three 416 Rigby's, all of which had to be and are reliable for feeding, ignition, extraction and ejection. Speaking of ejection if you use an Enfield you may want to replace the original ejector with one that uses a coil spring as the original's flat spring is prone to break.

Hope your project goes well.

yep..you are right.. i forgot that, as I "always" put them on enfields.. the kength of throw due to the rearranged cocking piece is WAY short

I recently installed the Dayton cock on opening on my 1917 which has a Timney trigger. Everything seemed fine until I checked by pulling the trigger with the safety on. Upon safety release, the firing pin drops. Called both Timney, who says their triger will not work with the kit, and Dayton Traister. Greg at D-T says that it will work, but might require some modification to the sear face on the trigger, or cocking piece. He also said to check and make sure the safety edge is 100%. To date, I have not attempted any modification. Is the D-T trigger any good? It would save some work if it is.

How ironic....I just posted the EXACT same question on 24hourcampfire a week ago.

I have a Win Enfield P17 that I currently have a Timney trigger on and want to convert it to cock on open. I was told the exact same things as posted on here for the most part. Think I'm gonna try it and see what happens. Think I'll start with the Numrich.

FWIW...joe25/06, I had the same thing happen when I installed a Timney on my VZ-24 Mauser (firing pin drop when the safety was taken off). I needed to take a little more metal off the trigger sear. I ended up having a gunsmith do it, cuz I wasn't comfortable with it. Now it works great. The smith said I just hadn't "finished the job"...thnk he charged me $30. Small price for peace of mind!
