We see quite a few things that are eye openers here, just like what happened yesterday.

A friend called and said a man he knows is having problems sighting in his rifle, and would I mind doing it for him.

The man arrived with a Remington 700 in 22-250. It is one of those really nice rifles, with a fluted HB and synthetic stock.

He had a Leupold 4.5-14 scope on it, in German made mounts.

I normally take the scope off, and make sure that the bases are installed properly.

As I took the scope off, I noticed gobs of what looked like glue around the bases. I took a small screw driver and tried to remove it, and found that it was absolutely SOLID!

I asked the man who installed his scope bases.

"I did it myself. I super glued them to the rifle first, then super glued the screws too!

I did not say anything. Put the scope back on. I fired the rifle. It was shooting about 2 feet to the left, and 2 feet high.

I re-adjusted it, and gave him his rifle.

At least the bases are not going to come undone!

He left smiling.

Had this been Bubba, he'd have showed up with a Savage and the bases would have been arc welded on!

At the risk of making myself a laughing stock, I have (intentionally) epoxied the bases on a 375 Mauser I have, as part of working up greater accuracy for it (but not the screws, obviously).

I learned about the technique from a gunsmith who made custom bases, and thought I would try it. That, and few other techniques shrunk the groups considerably.

I haven't been too worried about experimenting with epoxy in my firearms. When I want to break the seal, I put the parts in the -40 degree (centigrade) freezer at my hospital.
The epoxy cracks loose (without adhesion) at very low temps.

Someone brought me a rifle recently to sight in. He claimed to have shot it before but could not get it sighted in. The scope was mounted with the windage-adjustable rear base on the front ring (and vice versa)! Once I remounted the bases, it collimated and shot just fine.

I wonder if I would want to be out in the woods or on the firing line with a guy that had to have someone else sight in his rifle.

a soldering iron will break down superglue too.. but don't try that to get your fingers apart!!

Thanks for the tip on removing epoxy, I know where to find a -80 freezer. I know Nail polish remover will do the trick on removing superglue.

One of my co-workers asked another firearms instructor to help him sight in his new .300 RUM this season. His request was "if you get it sighted in, I'll shoot it a couple of times to see where it hits" apparently he doesn't like the recoil. We left him five rounds in the box to hunt with

Methyl chloride will also remove epoxy and most all glues as well.
It's commonly used in the plastics industry, and isn't hard to find.
Besides removing glue or epoxy, it will bond two pieces of plastic together by "melting" the joint together.
The ultra cold freezer is more fun, however.
