I have a m700 338 ultra mag. I am pondering the possibility of re-barreling it, to 416 remington magnum. 416 shells seem to cycle out of the magazine fine...is there any problems or issues with this conversion? what about the bolt face?

any help would be much appreciated.

It won't work. The Ultra-Mag bolt face is of larger diameter than that of a magnum round based on the .375 H&H case. You'd need a new bolt. There is no alteration that you could do to your current bolt to adapt it to a standard magnum. It would be much cheaper and a lot less hassle to trade your rifle in on another rifle in the caliber of your choice.....

I would think if they will stay down in the mag then all else should work out fine. I would make sure that it works with a full magazine first.

I don't know if the ultra mags have the windows cut in the mag box like the wsm's. If so this could be the only difference between the standard mags and the ultra mags. Sure sounds that way to me, as many people that have talked about doing the mag to UM conversion with very little to no problem.

the ultramag has the same casehead diameter as the standard mag (slightly rebated 404 jeffe-ry)

i don't know of anyone doing this... but i an tell you that it would be FAR cheaper to get a cz in 416 than doing a model 700 (which is a pushfeed)

or, even a better solution, get it in 458 and load it to where you like the recoil.

The mod 700 will always be a push feed... always.. mebbe a sako extractor pushfeed....

should it be a straight rebarrel, it would be about 450 for barrel, chamber, and blue..

the cz can be had for 650 us... so if you get a sent more than 200 for your remington, you are ahead

The thing is that it's already a complete rifle. If there is nothing wrong with it then that's it's highest value. If one changes stuff the value will still be about the same or even less.

While the bolt face and feeding seem to be ok the M700 is not CRF and the 416 is a dangerous game cartidge.

So just sell the 338 RUM and buy a 416.

As stated previously the bolt faces are the same for the ultramags and the 416rem.If the rounds cycle properly from the magazine,I would not hesitate to do the rebarrel.

I think you'll find that the feed rails are different in a standard magnum and an Ultra- Mag. Look at the magazine and see the difference in width of a Umag magazine box and a
standard mag. Under recoil the second and third cartridge will have a tendency to pop up together, jamming the action. Don't do it, buy a new rifle. Magazines are tricky.

There is one issue you should consider.

What I will describe I have seen on several Rem 700 375s and a few months back someone posted about the same problem with a 375 Ultra. I owned a 416 Rem in Rem 700 facory and it did not display the problem.

The problem that can occur with them is failure to eject a live round (or a misfire) when the bolt is pulled back very quickly.

Remington don't cut away the back of the receiver for the 375 length calibres like Winchester do. Winchester also thins the right hand side. What appears to happen is that when the bolt is pulled back very quickly it reaches the end of its travel before the cartridge can start ejecting. This results in the cartridge hitting the side of the rear receiver and falling onto the follower.

My guess is that the problem is not seen with 7mm STWs, 300 Ultras etc because the bullet is much lighter so the cartridge can start ejecting earlier abd be at the appropriate angle when the bolt is fully back. Probably the larger diamter of the 375 bullet/neck is adding to the problem.

Winchester's 300 Ultra Mag has the same rail setup as their 300 Wby, so I can see the feeding being a non-issue.
The base of the RUM is - what? - .550"? And the Rem Mag is .532", not much at all. And they both have about the same taper.
Now, why you would want to do that is beyond me, since it seems to make more sense to sell the gun for maybe $400, add another $400 and be in the ballpark of a 416 M70.
But you didn't ask my opinion on that, did you!

I just was wondering. I prefer remington rifles and stainless steel. already had a ruger no1 416 rem, really like the cartridge. i got this 338 ultra at a good cost and was just wondering if it was possible to use the action as a platform for a 416 rem re-barrel. I already got a 7mm m700 stainless i could use, but I dont really want to tear it apart! Frowner :P

thanks for the info
