I just got a dakota safety for a mauser and I installed a military shroud lock and spring. It won't lock the shroud in the open bolt position. It looks as the lock needs to move back farther or the shroud needs to screw farther onto the bolt (can't without modifiying it). Did I get a bad shroud with the threads not timed properly of am I doing something wrong. I've installed 3 position safeties before and never had this problem, never used a dakota though.

I will be interested to hear what others have to say because I just had one professionally installed(a Dakota) and it locks the shroud but there is way more play than I am used to. I thought the plunger was worn out so I installed another and it is better, but still not right.

I've had Dakota safeties that just seemed to not be timed right.....but I've been lucky enough to have several Mauser actions around and the safety will always (it seems) fit one of them..

From my personal experience If I bought a Dakota Safety to fit a specific Mauser bolt.....the chances it will work are about 65%.....

The only safety I have heard no complaints about is LaPours.....I still like the Dakota.....just return it to Brownells and get another one!

Let me add.....I think something else is happening here as I've never had one of Jim Kobe's safetys fail to work due to timing and if there was a timing difference in a lot of Mauser bolts this would affect his safetys as well...

I have installed 4 of them, and never had a problem. But is has been a couple of years ago.

On the play issue, mine seem to be comparable to the original military shrouds in that regard.

I like mine, but have never used any other brand, so I do not really have anything to compare to. But I have a couple of pre-64 M70s, and the Dakota's seem to me to be about as nice as those.

I know the Lapour costs about $220. Does anyone know what it costs to have him(Lapour) install one?

This is the problem I have been preaching about for a while now. The Gentry's are in the same boat as the Dakota's. I wouldn't doubt that the Dakota's are made by Gentry.

I went with Ed LaPous's safty for a 1909 Arg, just for the reason being said now. I started a post about safties and got all kinds of answers. Sat back and listened to others and some others seemed to be having problems also. In my mind, LOL, something that is over size and needs to be fitted sounded a lot better than just slapping something together. I have'nt finished install yet ( getting ready for a hunt), But I did fit the threads to the bolt. First I thought what in the hell did I get into, but after about 30 mins. work it all fell in place and talk about smooth. I'll finish it up when the weather gets worse and being in the shop is alot better than being outdoors. I am glad I went with Ed's product!!!
E-mail him, he'll give you whatever answers you need...He did for me and in a very timely manner also, I'll do more with him in the future!

Don: I had Ralf Martini install Dakotas on two Brno 21/22's. His invoice also included 2 new shroud pins and springs so assume he found the same situation. The Dakota shroud contours matched the rear receiver ring of the Brnos better than 2 other makes that he had on hand and he recommended the Dakota for that reason.
They function and look just fine and I'm quite happy with them. You might contact him for details on the pins and springs.

We did three of these, Don, and had problems with the opening in the Dakota shroud where that little tang on the plunger slides.

We removed some metal on the end--can't remember which, function of age, LOL--and it worked fine.

Good luck,

flaco
