I asked this in an earlier post and got good comments on these barrels. It appeared that they are accurate good quality barrels, and I am having one custom profiled for a short action now.

Thanks for the reply. I am looking at one of their barreled actions in 338 Lapua. I am a lefty and there selection and availability of left hand actions are a gift from heaven for a left hand shooter. Very reasonably priced also. I just sold a right handed Sako 338 Lapua. Now I can have one with the bolt on the correct side. Awsome round, everybody should have one.

You may just need to do a search on Montana. I had a thread a few months ago asking the same question.

I have seven or eight in different calibers, and accuracy has been outstanding.

So if I buy a barreled action and a good pre-fit stock am I done. Is there any hidden gunsmithing work that will have to be done?

I think that is it. From what I have read, some of the guys have had the barreled action sent down the road to Serengeti Stockworks and had a stock put on there before shipping it to them. They have stocks in all ranges or proce.

other than it's not a custom gun, so to speak, rather an assembled factory to your specs (it's not REALLY splitting hairs) they make good rifles

I think mine will be off to Mark Stratton as soon as Dan Wayne lets me know it is ready. Mark has a few things he needs to help me out on such as the mounts, a little action work, and a new straight bolt handle. From there, I am still looking for a stockmaker [?] That darned Westley Richards pattern is causing a little heart burn, but it is what I want!

Mine shoots every bit as good as my Douglas or Lilja and all I did was stick it in a stock I hacked up myself and bedded myself...both for the first time. Believe me, it has to be because of them!!!

Just put it in a McMillan for under 450 and go out and kill something with it!
I am awaiting my 458 Leftie Lott MRC stainless barreled action and the McMillan.
Hell, I may put a red dot on it just to tork off the purists even further, lol.
But, now that I think about it, a red dot could be just the ticket for crawling thru the alders after a big brownie.

We can speak with some authority as we use about a hundred per year. The Montana Rifleman barrel is second to none, and will almost always shoot in the 1/2-3/4" range starting with the first five rounds. And much of that with factory ammo. With a single exception several years ago, the challenge in getting the rifle to shoot has never been in the barrel.

Rod has it right. He showed me some Montana barrels, with the use of a borescope. Exceptional finish on the inside. I was very impressed. And as he says, they shoot!

I have never owned or even seen one of their barrels and have only heard great things about their barrels. I will say that their actions, though a solid foundation, are not finished all that well. Every action that I have seen was very rough. I have over 8 hours in draw filing the one I own and have at least a couple more to go before I can rust blue it. Also the one I own will not feed from the left side of the magazine. Like I said they are a solid foundation and these are all easy fixes. If I get another one it will be Teflon coated or at least bed blasted and hot blued. Way to much work to get one really right though.

Bluetick, Have you bought one currently? Do the current versions need all this work? Because I have seen a few and didnt see anything wrong with them.

I have not seen one that was made in the last year or so but the latest ones I have seen still had that almost as cast look to them. Like I said they are fine if you want to coat them with something or bead blast them and hot blue. The latest ones I have seen are way to rough to rust blue. It's not like an action with a pit here or there either. The roughness is very uniform and generally deeper in the corners. You will work your butt off getting one right.

Are you saying it is purely cosmetic? Chrome moly or stainless? Dang I talked to a lot of people who liked how they looked. They few I seen looked good
