Looking for advice/suggestions. Have Win M70 S/S Classic in 300WM. Do not like Boss; Too much adjustment involved when changing cartridge brands, bullet weights & working up handloads. Removed Boss but accuracy suffered greatly. As I see it, removing Boss and getting good accuracy, leaves me the following options: 1. Cut and recrown barrel(no assurance of acceptable result.). 2. Rebarrel wi premium barrel- wi attendant costs. 3. Sell rifle & replace wi another. Note: I really like the action. I have another one in 338 WM, without Boss. The Boss does what is claimed. When I get it dialed in to the sweet spot I can shoot cloverleafs wi it. But, for me its a pain when switching ammo and/or or working wi handloads. Any other options?

Winchester Classis S/S are a little hard to come by and the 300 WM shot well for many years before BOSS. If it were mine I'd cut it off, recrown as see how it shoots. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

YUP! After all, if the barrel shoots you've got it made. If it doesn't, put a new tube on it. My buddy's opinion of the BOSS system (he has one) is that they were put on in an attempt to make a poor barrel shoot well. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them" - George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment during the Virginia convention to ratify the Constitution

I had mine cut off and recrowned. It shoots sub moa groups with my pet handload, same handload it shot well before. Guess I got lucky there. Cut it and keep it. Si tantum EGO eram dimidium ut bonus ut EGO memor

Thanks all for your input. Tomorrow I will take to gunsmith for cut & recrown job. I talked to them a few days ago and they tell me it will be about two weeks turnaround. Will let you know the results after I get it back and try it out at the range.

I'm not sure I understand your problem with the BOSS. With it, as you yourself say, you can tune effectively to match a load, though it takes some time and effort. But the setting for one load does NOT match that required for best accuracy with other loads. Granted. No surprise there. But, without a BOSS or similar system, other than by sometimes almost endless monkeying with the loads themselves, you can't tune the RIFLE to match ANY load except by putting shims various places between the stock and barreled action. And you sure can't tune it to match available factory loads out in the boonies when you are forced to use whatever the local seller has. So, what will be gained by eliminating the ability to do any tuning (i.e., the BOSS)?

I have an A-Bolt (338 wn mag) with the BOSS and understand exactly what you are saying. However I have two factory loads and one hand load that shoot extremely well (210, 225 & 250 grain). I am satisfied with those. I thought about a custom barrel, but then how many different loads would it shoot really well? Possibly not any more, so what would I gain? I won't buy another gun with the BOSS, but now that I have it and the fact that it shoots extremely well, leads me to believe I will have it a long time.

Canuck- Do not diasagree with you. Some guys like to tinker a lot. I do not like to spend any more time than necessary. I find it much easier to work with my other rifles in working up handloads and using factory ammo, changing bullet weights, etc.; none of them have a Boss. Gives me more time for other things(hunting, etc.) I do not want to spend a lot of time tuning. .338 zmag gets it.

the boss is for tuning the barrel to the load.... if it's too much trouble, take it off, put on a thread cover, and work up a load... or sell it opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? The BOSS is intended to replace blind luck in finding a barrel and a load that go well together. With a B.O.S.S., you can make any load shoot well in even a reasonably good barrel. You don't have to piss around in the dark hoping you can find a load your rifle likes. Let's say you like a particular Nosler bullet...such as a 200 grain .30 Partition. With the BOSS you can tune your rifle to shoot it well. Once you have the rifle shooting it well, you don't have to fiddle aropund with the B.O.S.S. any more. You can ignore the fact that the B.O.S.S. is even there. It will keep on shooting that load well until you want to use another, different load. Then you can write down the setting for the first load, and seek out the proper setting for your new load. Then you can re-set in seconds for either load, or even wander on in your experimenting and use a third load if you get a real buy on some other kind of bullet you want to use for practice. It is always better practice if the practice load is accurate in your gun too. Nobody is forced to keep tweaking a BOSS if they have one. But if they don't have one, they may have to do a LOT of tweaking to find the best load for their rifle... Or they may be lucky and find their rifle loves anything put through it. But there aren't many guns like that.

Toomanytools, Masterrifleman, Slowpoke Slim- Thanks all for your input. Had Boss removed, barrel cut & recrowned(two days turn around). Have since worked up promising load: 180 gr Hornady SST wi 76.0gr RL22 @ seat depth of 3.826(per Stony Point Comp.) Today shot 7/16" three shot group! Will do more testing to confirm this load, but looks very promising. You guys were right on. Thanks again.
