Hey Guys, I've always loved the Remington 30s and 720s. I've had a dozen or so of them over the years, but never had the guts to break up an original gun to build a custom out of it. The damn things went and got collectable. But, today, one of my buddies calls me from a gunshow and tells me that he's found a 30 action! No barrel or stock, but the rest is there, including bolt and bottom metal. I was excited, told him to pay too much, but not to let it go. I also asked him to inquire about the rest of the gun, but it was all long gone. The gist of it is that I now get to build on the action I've been wanting to for a long time. So, it seems like a 404 Jeff is the way to go, but I'm wondering what you fellows would do. I'd like to stick with a classic over 40, but I'm really fond of the Lott as well. Give me some ideas, and hopefully, I can do a work in progress. I'll not build it myself (as I've no skills), but I'm sure I'll have a bit of input into how it is done. Thanks!

Mine is going to be a 416 Rigby. I think Duane Weibe ran out of bottom metal, but I think he is going to do another run.John Farner,Toomanytools, is working om mine at this time making it feed. I hope to get it soon as I just picked up the barrel for it. Butch

If it was mine, the answer would be the .35 Newton. The brass is easily made from.375 Ruger, it is a classic American cartridge for which Western used to manufacture ammo, and it is from the same era as the Model 30. It also moves a 250 gr. bullet right at 3,000 fps, which ain't too terribly shabby. My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

What was the original parent case of the 35 newton?

I believe the 30 and 35 Newton shared a unique case. Jason "You're not hard-core, unless you live hard-core." _______________________ Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt. Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure. -Jason Brown

".30 Adolf Express, Later called the .30 Newton. Some claim Mr. Newton based his necked down design on the 11.2x72 Schuler cartridge. However, the 11.2x72 is believed to have originated in 1920, too late to have been the parent case for a 1913 Adolf Express. The same is true of the 11.2x60 Mauser, introduced after WWI, but possibly earlier. The 1917 Newton Catalogue does state the original Adolf Express case "used a foreign shell necked down and required Berdan primers"

The 11.2 m/m Schuler, if I recall correctly. But then I was wrong once before.... As mentioned above, the dates are in conflict, depending on who one reads, but as the rounds were developed in cooperation with Mr. Adolph, who some say learned his trade in Germany, and there were other Newtion connections directly to Germany, we will probably never know for absolute certain. Thanks for the ideas, guys! I'm kinda leaning towards the 416 Rigby now. I'm not sure why. If all goes well, this action will turn into my main Africa DGR. So, I want something that is classically African, not too terribly off the wall, but yet more than effective. I've already a Lott on a Mark X, and a 375 on a ZKK-602. I'd rather take the Model 30 back to Africa though!

If you're looking for opinions, I'd stick to your oroginal idea of a .404J. I have both the .4040J and a .416R and find the Jeffrey much more pleasant to shoot. This may not be a factor but the bolt face doesn't have to be as big and cases can easily be made from .375 RUM's, one pass through a .404J sizer. "I ask, sir, what is the Militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them" - George Mason, co-author of the Second Amendment during the Virginia convention to ratify the Constitution
