Rebarrelling to 300 H&H?

I'm thinking about starting a project to rebarrel a Remington 700 to 300 H&H.

My question is: Is there a chambering that is better to start off with as far as feeding goes?
I've heard that very little has to be done to the 7 mm Rem. Mag's feeding rails to make the H&H work. Anyone have any recommendations?

May I suggest you aquire about five .300 H&H rounds and go to used gun stores and inquire of the owner if he would permit you to privately check some used guns to see if the rounds will feed in such chamberings as the 7mm Rem mag, 300 Win Mag,.338 Mag etc....but for sure get the store owners permission first.....

It's possible the H&H round will feed in all of them. It may also feed in the 7mm STW, .300 Wby, 8mm Rem Mag etc......but this way you will have a good idea how it works!

what vapo is saying is

the 300 HH wont' fit in a standard length magnum AS IS.

THough, I'll be REALLY honest, this is a loosing proposistion, as you could just buy a 300 rum and load it DOWN to 300 HH, or even a 300 Win and load it down to 300 HH, and not cost you 400-600 bucks for a rebarrel and rechamber and refinish

First, try to find a 700 Classic chambered in 300 H&H. They come available from time to time.

Any Remington 700 long action will work. I have an '06 action on my bench that I converted for a magnum round (bolt face only) that houses and feeds the H&H round just fine provided a standard magnum follower is used.

I hope this doesn't appear that I am trying to hijack this thread but I have a 721 Remington rifle in 30-06 and a 300 H&H barrel that came off a 721 also. Could a reliable 300 H&H rifle be made to work from these parts without breaking the bank too bad?

I have been unsuccessful at finding a magnum faced 721 bolt for this project, no surprise really, so my next best choice seems to be doing something like the above. I do have a box as well as a spring and follower that came from a Remington 700 magnum in a drawer somewhere if needed.

If you take rounds to check,,,,,,,,, be sure that you have dummy rounds..... no primers no powder.

Seems if you pack up the gun and barrel and ship it off to Westpac you'll get a .300 H&H back from him.....now there's a fine thing to do to an old Remmy 721

Ken in VA,

I always was interested in the 'famous' 300 H&H cartridge. Finally an old M70 came my way and I have been shooting it for fun. All in all its now just a long heavy rifle that has short case life for the handloader.

I made brass from the .375 H&H's and set the shoulder to feel with the bolt close. Never the less the 8 degree 300's shoulder will not hold back and they get case expansion web thinning sooner than rounds with normal shoulders that are belted.

Another thing is that I would not buy or build any big game hunting rifle on a Remington 721/2 or 700 series action. I don't prefer their extractor, ejector, lack of CRF, two position safety thats only on the trigger, brazed on bolt lug section, and brazed on bolt handle.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

Pay no attention to him Ken, that Remington 700 action will make a great hunting rifle regardless of what caliber you choose or what game you're after.
