I normally don't care much for country music, but it was appropriate in the case of this thread. Well... Uncle Sam is sending me to Kansas City (Overland Park, technically) next month for a few days, so... is there any neat "gun" thing I should see while I'm there? Any neat gun stores? Cowboy museums? Any Cabela's/Bass Pro/Gander Mountain nearby? "Anything?" Thanks. Russ

No Cabelas...No Gander Mountain...No Bass Pro (although I think that one or two of them are scheduled to be built in the next year or so). There is a Galyan's on 119th & Nall that has some decent sporting goods stuff. There is an indoor range/gun shop "The Bullet Hole" that is good if you want to light off a few rounds. If you are here over the weekend, there may be a nearby IHMSA silhouette competition. Drop me a line if you like and I can tell you more.

Expected to open on August 15, 2002, with the Grand Opening scheduled for September 6-15, 2002, the Kansas City facility will be located at the intersection of I-435 and I-70 near the Kansas Speedway." Contrary to the suggestions by the two assholes above, motherfuckers that they are, I'll hang out at Cabela's. I'll check out Galyan's and "The Bullet Hole," too. Many thanks. Russ

Maybe you don't read the news and follow things like little girls being kidnapped and brutally murdered... but there's a lot of assholes out there who need to die and aren't dead yet. Like some of the morons who posted responses above. They are not amusing, I have no use for them, so they should die. Or I can if they feel like killing me. Either way. I don't particularly care. Humans are annoying beings I have to tolerate. "Humanity" ceased to exist a long time ago. Yes, I do "rant" occasionally when I watch CNN... because I give a damn about the various situations that are going on. No, I do NOT "find the humor" in them. I don't see "cheery" things to be happy about. I just figure people who do have such outlooks don't give a damn... and again, I have no use for them, so I'd rather they die so I don't have to deal with them. I've been around the world (and this nation) a bit, and I've seen pain, suffering, misery, et cetera. There isn't much (anything?) about my fellow man that I find amusing. To include a few of the asshole posters on this thread. You have a nice day, sir. Russ

Nice picture of the guy with his Teddy Roosevelt gun. That doesn't look too far. Hell, after driving seven hours from the Quad Cities, what's a few more miles? I did 19 hours to FT Lee, VA, both ways, so this will be a walk... rather, "drive"... in the park. Thanks for the idea! Russ

Russ - Jeez man......you've got to lighten up or you are going to pop a blood vessel! Most if not all of us on this forum have seen our share of misery and the worst side of humanity - I'd wager there are some who have seen more than you. As for KC, take your shotgun and spend some time at a clays course.. its like golf - only with a shotgun - it works for me. So does smoking a good cigar on a ride in my old car with the music turned up.... If all else fails I resort to some Johnny Walker Red and soda.

Not to get into the middle of things too much but there is a new museum in the River Market area near town featuring a recovered steam ship. This ship was completely loaded with supplies and sank somewhere upriver from KC. It was recovered a few years ago and many of the goods were remarkably well preserved. I'm sorry but I can't remember the name off hand. It's not related to our normal topics here but I think most anybody would enjoy it greatly. If you're a BBQ fan you might try Arthur Bryant's or Gates. They are both the old original type BBQ. Do an internet search for locations and you can't go wrong. A sandwich at Arthur Bryant's is close to 3 inches thick. You can't go wrong with a slab of ribs either. Galyans is fun but try and stay away from those other places... Reed

Reed - You're talking about the Steamboat "Arabia" and it is an interesting exhibit on the River Market (5th & Walnut). Russel - I wasn't aware that Cabela's had actually opened their doors, but I haven't been to the race track in over a year. I'm sure that will be a good place to get your fill of sporting goods stuff. I would second the notion that you need to consume as much BBQ as possible while you're here. My first choice is Oklahoma Joe's as they have easily the best spicy sauce available in town. Bryant's has a good burnt end sandwich, but the sauce leaves much to the imagination. I still suggest that you check out an IHMSA shoot if you are here on the right days.

Well, according to Cabela's, the store will be "open" in August, about a week before I'm out that way -- but the grand opening is in September. Thanks, guys, for the eatery suggestions. I'm much obliged. If I have time, I'll look into the IHMSA shoot. I've been to a few of them over the years (never competed, though -- my Python was, at the time, too expensive for "production class" [1989/1990] and my Lone Eagle wasn't allowed because I had a scope... or something like that). Thanks, folks. Russ

Springfield, Missouri, isn't too far away (2-3 hours I think). It's the home of Bass Pro Shops, they have a huge store there that I drove down to see when I spent a week at Whiteman AFB. They've got quite a taxidermy collection, I think it's worth the drive.

Russ, You work for Uncle Sam? Postal Service? Back in the mid 80's I was stationed at Whiteman AFB as a SAC missle flight surgeon until I could get the follow on to Alaska. I started buying and trading shotguns and big bore rifles in earnest with John Wahl of Blairstown, Missouri back then. My first taste of 460 WBY, 340 Wby Fibermark (first factory rifle with a synthetic stock), and 458 WM, etc. rifles back then. John Wahl had converted an old two story building on Main Street to an arms depot. Railroad car loads of guns and ammo would roll up and unload there on a regular basis. I wonder what ever happened to John Wahl. He was in his mid seventies back then, wheeling and dealing big time. Bill Sharp's redneck barbecue joint (on I-70) was on the way to KC from Whiteman. Best barbecue I ever had. Sauce supreme, hot. My NCO and I would go there every Friday for lunch. The NCO's taught me to duck hunt in Truman Reservoir, nearby. Filled my waders several times. One unfortunate airman was mistaken for a turkey and shot dead by his turkey hunting NCO with a 10 guage while I was there. I had a wild turkey commit suicide on the grill of my pickup truck on the road to Knob Noster, MO. There was one interesting gun shop in KC, Galyan's sounds familiar, but it was long ago ... Get a grip Russ, it is fun teasing. You can take it without going postal.

That some people derive pleasure from the humiliation of other people in the guise of being humorous is rather sick. I don't do it, and I don't appreciate it. I enjoy the fact that I only have to tolerate such people here, because I damn sure don't in my work or personal life. Russ [ 07-18-2002, 07:18: Message edited by: Russell E. Taylor ]

Russell, e-mail me when you are coming and I will be happy to show you around if I can get some time from work. I can take you to "Psycho Bob's" gun shop. He is kind of out there, but he has some cool HIGH dollar guns. I also know the guys at the Bullet Hole which is next door to the Hodgden Powder headquarters and the Sierra Bullet factory is 90 minutes away and they sell "seconds" by the pound. A pound usually ends up being 2-4. Yes, there is also Gates BBQ as well. [ 07-18-2002, 07:28: Message edited by: larrys ]

Take in Strouds for a great chicken dinner. The Longbranch on 87th is a fine place to wet your whistle. The Plaza for creature comforts. Horse and dawg racing, and casinos if you lean that way. The Ft. Leavenworth museum (25 minutes from OP) has a gem of a collection. The Ft. is pretty cool too. Truman Library is worth the trip, and the Combat Air Museum in Topeka (1 1/4) hours West is a must see. On the Kansas side, shops include the Bullet Hole, with an indoor range, Simmons which sells retail now, and the Gun Shop which is next door has a fine collection of quality guns.

Russ, You most certainly are a tease with the goofy posts that goad us to tease back. You are either really sick or a tease, and a prissy one at that, judging by all your whining. You are a whiner, one of two classes of people in this world. You don't have to put up with us anymore than we have to put up with you. Just for fun, eh? Suffer the fool ... You do not inspire confidence in my government. You sure you aren't from the USPS? DOD! Sierra bullets in Sedalia, MO? Just thirty miles up the road from old Knob Noster? Love those GameKings AND MatchKings. RIP Bill Ruger. [ 07-18-2002, 08:36: Message edited by: DaggaRon ]

Look, "Dag," I don't have the same perspective on it. You won't find a single instance of me "teasing" anyone, anywhere, anytime. That you feel I am is a failure in perception on your part. I'm blunt, candid, and honest. You and your ilk simply feel that my being so is some kind of opening for smart-ass comments. Whining? So say you. I don't mind insults, but I prefer them to be honest. Lying about them by saying it's teasing is simply that... a lie. I abhor liars... which pretty much covers your act. At least when I call you an asshole, I won't say I'm teasing. I'll just say I'm calling you an asshole, and you're certainly welcome to do something about it if you want. Fuck you very much, and have a nice day. Russ

Russ if you to Sierra in Sedalia, go to the receptionist desk and ask for a tour of the plant. I was there last Friday and really enjoyed it. It takes about 45 Minutes and is given by one of their Ballistic Technicians. They are very generous with their by the pound bullets, even the Matchkings.

Russ, It is obvious to me that you suffer from serious affective and personality disorders. Get help. The proper drugs, electroconvulsive therapy or institutionalization, in that order, would be the way to proceed. I am sorry to have wasted my time in this, and I would not have been so incensed by your antics except for your sociopathy with Bill Ruger's legacy. Take note Americans, this is a computer specialist serving the U.S. DOD in its mission? Right! If so, no wonder the world is in such a mess. And he calls me an actor and a liar, as if he knows what honor means? Incredible. Keep digging your hole, Russ, or climb out of it.

Russ rather than talking about killing everyone. Why don't you do us a favor and ice yourself. Either that or just don't breed. You would really mess up the gene pool even worse than it is.
