I need the legal info for shipping 25 rds of 416 Rem ammo.
I want the legal requirements not what people have done in the past.
I know it must go ground; I plan on using UPS.
What are the marking requirements? Do I need ORM-D Small Arms Ammunitiion or will ORM-D Consumer Commodities work and then add Small Arms Ammunition with a Marker? Or does this small of a quantity not require labeling?

Safest thing if to call your LOCAL UPS. WHY? IF you call corporate are you get one answer then go to the local place and get another, you are screwed. Go straight to the local guy, he will be the one to accept the package anyway.
I won't tell you what I did but I will tell you how ammo was shipped to me from places like Cabela's and Bass pro shops.
Ground Only with an adult signature required. No ORM-D on the box or shipping lable. I've received it this way from both UPS and USPS. Ammunition is not considered as hazardous as say powder and primers
But As BAxter said Go to the shipper and ask as they will accept the package. Get what you can in writing so you can argue latter on.
But In reality just drop it in a box and ship it. Pack it good and don't worry about it. If UPS and USPS were that good about finding out who and what was shipped those anthrax letters would have never made it to their victims
The box MUST be marked "ORM-D" to keep it on the ground and off any aircraft. Both UPS and Fed-Ex will put Ground shipments into the air if it is in their best interest. The pre-loading sniffers will pick up the smell of ammo and you will be getting unwanted visitors. Do not include "Small Arms Ammunition" on it.

We ship ammo almost every day and the only requirement, other than shipping Ground, is the addition of a label that reads "ORM-D, Small Arms Cartridges".
Quantity doesn't matter, one or a thousand.

I'm quite surprised that you had ammo shipped to you from Cabela's or BassPro via the USPS. It is illegal to do so.

Thanks for the info. I searched elsewhere and it seems that the ORM-D Cartridges, Small Arms needs marked on 3 sides.
Interestingly I read that it is legal to ship small arms ammunition by USPS but the USPS just doesn't want to address the DOT requirements. I will ship UPS to be safe.

I believe you can go to the UPS or USPS site and download images of the ORM-D label as well. It absolutely does NOT have to go signature required, but it is a good idea. I have it shipped to me all the time and I ask the sellers, mainly Midsouth, Grafs and Sportsman's guide, to ship without signature required and they are all happy to do so. I live in a very safe area for these type deliveries.
Some UPS stores will not take it. The depots will.
Other than that, just send it ground.

I always ship ammo UPS ground. You can't ship ammo to Mass,not even Cabelas can ship ammo to Mass! and to Illinois ,the person receiving needs a FOID (Fed ID) to be able to receive the ammo ....
UPS states "ORM-D' marked ,in a 200 lb burst resistant cardboard box .....
