Rechambering .300 Weatherby to .300 RUM

Is rechambering the .300 Weatherby to .300 RUM easy? It seems intuitive to me that it would be a really easy rechamber job save and accept for cleaning up the freebore. Any comments or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Depending on the rifle, the feed rails may have to be modified for the ultramag case to feed properly.

Ditto on needing at least a 26" barrel. You'll need a new magazine box as well as modifying the feed rails to get it to feed properly. In a 26" barrel my Weatherby's are usually good for about 3150 to 3200. The RUM's loaded equivelantly are good for 3250 to 3300. How much is 100fps worth to you?........DJ

All-

Barrel is 26". I figured I would have to get a new magazine box.

Didn't think about feed rails initially but, you're right there.

What are your thoughts about the chamber; implied in your comments that the chamber part of the job would be good?

Even if the barrels are 26" the 3% difference in velocity is minor indeed.....

If this is what you really wish to do I'd suggest you merely trade rifles.....It's less costly to do that than mess with the feeding and rechambering.......and I suspect that if cleaning up the freebore is also a goal you'll need a new barrel as well.

A 300 Wby should shoot 080's at an honest 3300 feet per second. Factory ammo does. My 23" 300 Wby gets 3200. In a longer barrel like 28 or 30 a 300 Wby really flies as would a 300RUM. If your looking for performance I would start with a longer tube.

And who is going to stick a high dollar reamer into a throat that might be hard as crystal. You know the thing that always kills me from the faster is better crowd is how they howl when the bore is gone in 500 rds. Not that they can't be honest with themselfs to admit they can't really see the difference in the few fps they gain. Ask yourself why nobody in the 1000 yd bench crowd is shootin this ctg. Ask them why, then make up your mind. I know I'am and old fart, but I like the ctg better that gives me close to the same velo with 10 to 20 grains less powder, less throat erroision, lower temps ect, ect. Good brass that does not cost an arm and a leg. If I go off somewhere to hunt and the lousy airline lost my ammo I have a chance to maybe find some some where (yes it does really happen) And the good Lord knows I love my wild cats.

All-

I appreciate all of your comments. I posed my original question because at the present time I have one rifle in each of .300 Weatherby and .300 RUM and I am thinking of limiting myself to one since their performance characteristics are so similar. I therefore was and still am giving serious consideration to rechambering the .300 Weatherby to .300 RUM.

Both rifles are great shooters; the .300 RUM has had less than 70 rounds through it and the .300 Weatherby has had less than 100 rounds through it.

In addition, I have my own reamer thus, my questions really centered around the difference in chambers and whether re-chambering the .300 Weatherby could be done without a significant amount of set back.

Thanks

The 300wby's that I have chronographed(26" barrels) produced 3220fps to 3250fps with factory loads and there were extrusion marks on the brass. My handloads produced about 3230fps with no extrusion marks present. My 300 ultramags with 26" barrels produce 3340fps to 3350fps.In other words a difference of just over 100fps.All velocities quoted are for 180gr bullets.
