The very first 470 Mbogo was (is) a rebored Ruger Magnum M77 Mk II. I believe it is the only one of its kind. I now own it. The re-boring was done by Cliff LaBounty. The results were great, but I don't know the cost of the work.

Check out www.470mbogo.com if you haven't already. The rifle in the article "Start to Finish" is the same one. Dave (posts here under the name 470 Mbogo) killed 3 cape buff with it in 1998.

I took the same rifle to Tanzania in Sept 2006 and killed three more buff with it.

Cheers,
Canuck

Akhutr,

Cliff LaBounty sold off his reboring business to Jim Dubell of Delta Gun Shop.

Jim calls the reboring aspect of his business Clearwater Reboring.

Hi Akhutr,
As Canuck mentioned the first one was done by Cliff LaBounty who was a superb machinist. I'm not familiar with the new fellow that owns the equipment. I had one other Ruger single shot re bored by another company and it didn't turn out so well. They said the barrel steel had a hard section that caused the boring tool to chatter and did in the barrel. You can contact the fellow that has the equipment and ask him what you can expect and what twist rate he would be able to turn for you. Cliff did the first one at 1 in 14 which is pretty common for the 470's. You can ask him if he can do a quicker twist for you if you like. I don't know if Ruger has changed the magazine box stop in their new model 77's but the old one had a metal tit that stuck down to locate the front of the magazine box. This was a problem because it would eventually bend in the top of the magazine box with repeated recoil. The solution is to file it off and glass bed the front end of the magazine box. This is very easy to do. It only requires a small amount of glass bed on the stock inletting which still allows the magazine box to be removed as you would normally do.
If you have any other questions please send me a pm or just post them up.
Take good care,
Dave
