Hey guys,

I'm sure like many of you even when you haven't finished a current project, or when you don't currently have funds, you're playing around with future "possible" projects. I personally find the dreaming fun, and am sure many of you do too. So....

with a cz in 505 or 500 jeff priced about 3k, that's probably the cheaper/more expedient way into the 50's, but am wondering what the custom build up would be if you're already starting with:

09 argentine, surface ground, new bolt handle, 2pos safety, bolt release nicefied.

here's the list I was thinking I could get some fill in, I might be missing some things, so add please, and I'll throw in prices on things I know (?'s indicate a guess Wink )

-polish out/clean up tiny flats from surface grinding
-heat treat 100?
-barrel 255
-sights (install cost?) NECG 190 (I know, really it SHOULD have a 1/4 rib, but that's what, 500 bucks?)
-bottom metal (I think it's Duane that makes one with a drop plate that holds 4 down? I have a pm somewhere) $500
-Barrel install, feed work, $350?
-make that little half moon cut on the back of the receiver ring (that just looks cool)
-stock, if do your own pattern, have pantographed to $500 blank, finish and have checkered for 250 = <1k
-bluing 350
-sling studs 100 (not installed, banded front)

I'm seeing close to 3k right there, and that's with the action already in hand with the work done. but if it could be done for as close to or the same as the cz, would you do it? (I know, cz in 505 is better etc., but go ahead and consider coolness, nostalgia etc).

Have some fun guys.

im doing a .505 gibbs on a rem 30 action... for "coolness"... i happen to like the dogleg bolt, the big safety and the stippling on top of the action, both front and rear.... nostalgia, maybe....

I'm surprised, I guess nobody else enjoys this planning and scheming stuff. I knew Jeffe would come in for CZ but thought for sure I'd get more input on costs and such.

It seems to me that everybody that gets a cz sends it off to AHR to have a "package" done on it (very nice work, good price) which of course then has raised the price of the rifle more. So does the mauser worked up as a 500 jeffery compare straight across with the CZ, or would it be apple to apple to compare it to the CZ after Wayne gets done with it?

I think a 500 Jeffery has to be on a Mauser, not a CZ.

If the objective was just to shoot 50 calibre bullets to the point where the recoil caused the red light to come on then the 500 A2 wins that contest with ease.

To me and this is just personal but a 500 J or 505 loses everything in terms of the reasons why one would want either one when they are on a CZ.

Mike,

When you get a CZ in 505 Gibbs (I and three of my friends all have one) it feeds properly.

Buy Duane's bottom metal and go with the 98. That's my vote. I just love the pre-war mauser look. CZ may be more practical, but I'm just not very practical sometimes.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."
