stock finish question

I have a synthetic stock that shines too much. The finish looks like a hard epoxy. Steelwool doesn't touch the shine. Any ideas how to dull it? I don't have access to a dust/sand blaster.
Thanks in advance,

You don't say whose finish it is but if it is a Remingon or something similar, Iwould take it apart and wet sand it with 400 grit and water. It that is too dull, follow up with 600. Or...vise versa.

Fine steel wool, automotive rubbing compound and some slightly soapy water.

Many thanks for the good ideas. Will report back. It's a custom finish, stock is quality, but can't attach a name to it.
