A while back I sent a friend a match rifle barrel via UPS. I insured it for it value, about $400. The package was about a week late and when it finally arrived the box was empty, both the UPS driver and my friend noted the empty box on delivery. After about a month of haggling UPS finally just refused to pay for the insured package. They are liars and dishonorable thieves. Don't use them.

With all due respects friend.....this type of post has been on these forums for some time. You're not the first to say this about UPS.....There have been similar posts about Fed EX.....and while I don't actually remember right now probably the same for the USPS...maybe not.

Seems we have little choice to do business with a bad company or a worse one.

Best reply I've seen so far is this....if you have the documents go to the courthouse and file a small claims case against them and add to the insured cost the cost of travel and related costs to file the case.

I've been lucky and haven't had this problem....but if I did, I'd be very tempted to do just this.

Welcome to the We got scrwed by UPS insurance BS.

They refused a claim on a rifle stock that they broke.

It is a scam. I only use USPS or FEDEX.

They said that to me once. Funny thing is, they also have a rule that the driver isn't supposed to accept any packge that is NOT sufficiently packed. So, if they accept it, isn't it by default sufficiently packaged? They said no and I've never used them since.

My personal opinion is that usps is a criminal enterprize.

If you own a gun and you are not a member of the NRA and other pro 2nd amendment organizations then YOU are part of the problem.

Vapodog,
I know this has been done before. But I just want folks to know how irresponsible UPS is. I've been a long time user and have purchased untold amounts of insurance from them.
No more.
Unfortuanately, I deem my time worth more than a trip to small claims, and I'm sure that UPS gets by with their actions because people like me don't persue the issue..

Els, do you mean UPS or USPS? I've had much, much better luck with USPS in the past several years than UPS.

I ship USPS registered mail when sending firearms. It is the best there is and not much more money. It always gets there. Oh at least so far so good.

On UPS, in this case.

Ask them for the WEIGHTS at every hand off. That will show where the barrel was lost.

Then take them to the local small claims court.

April 26, 2006 I had a customer send me an action for truing and timing. It was sent UPS, Ground. Insured for $650.00 The sender put my e-mail address in the UPS system when it was shipped. I received a e-mailed me a tracking sheet. It listed the package size as 6 x 7 X 12 an 3.5 pounds. It cost $18. and some change.
I trued and timed the action, put it back in the box it was sent to me in. I went to the UPS office and was going to ship it back to the sender. First, the agent said I could not ship a firearm to a residence. I told her I was a federal firearms licensee and could ship a firearm back to its owner after I repaired it. She said she would not ship it. I asked to speak to her supervisor. The supervisor came out and checked my drivers license and a copy of my FFL. She told the agent to ship my package. As soon as the supervisor left the agent then said the package must be shipped over night. There was a line of folks out the door by this time. She had already labeled it for ground and given me a computer print out that matched the size and weight of the original senders specs. When she re labeled the package it grew to 10 X 12 X 12 inches and 6 pounds. Now that was some heavy label they put on the package. It cost $67.00 to ship and insure the package. I left madder than hell. When I got back to my office I looked at the senders shipping information. The same box, same contents and it grew and got heavier. I made about 25 calls trying to file a complaint. It took two weeks for the UPS supervisor to return my call and that was after I had been by the UPS terminal two times in person. I also had a friend who is a UPS Driver call the terminal manager and ask him to return my call. I have met with the terminal manager who has been transfered and spoke with the new terminal manager who said they were going to give me a refund. It has been almost 3 months. I am getting ready to present the matter to the US Attorneys Office as a Fraud complaint. I am also going to file a small claims complaint against UPS in state court. It will cost them more than the $40.00 to hire a lawyer to defend the claim. I work for the court system and it want cost me but the $10.00 to file the complaint.I think I will work on the subpoenas when I finishe writing this post. Win or loose It will cost them a lot of aggrevation. My business was doing $20,000.00 per year shipping with UPS. I have started shipping US Postal for everything.

I have grown to despise UPS and will never use them again. From what I can tell a lot of other people and business feel the same way. I have been told they have never regained the level of business they had before their last strike.
I hope they starve to death.

I had this conversation with a local UPS store owner recently. He's had a full carreer with UPS. Started out as a box thrower/line worker, then went to delivery, OTR driver, management and after he retired he bought a MailBoxes ETC store. These store's merged in with UPS a few years ago.

He said as long as UPS packs the rifle it's not insurable for anything but loss.

After reading this post I guess it doesn't cover that either. It would seem to me that some type of FTC laws would be broken if you took money for INS that you never honor.

Check with your Insurance Commisioners office. If UPS sells insurance they have to be licensed to do so. If not then the insurance is through an independent broker. If they use a broker you might do better dealing with the broker direct or let the Insurance Commissioners office begin an investigaion. That may motivate them to pay the claim verses deny the claim.
