I would like to share a tip I recently happened upon, although it is somewhat obvious and may only rate a "well duh!" from the followers of this site. I found a high number '03 at a shop last year for cheap. It had been restocked with a pretty nice piece of walnut and rebarreled in .257 Roberts. The magazine was blocked at the rear and a milled follower and spring installed. The follower is unknown origin, it's only marks being "6" or "9" stamped on the bottom. It was about 2.850" long.. The rifle wouldn't feed, the cartdrige on the left wanted to take a right turn on the way to the chamber. I also had a Yugo M24/47 Mauser on the bench. I redid the mag block to allow a 3" OAL of the cartdrige and installed the Yugo follower on the short spring.Feeds fine now.

The one I have (my dad's) is a standard 03 converted, I don't think anything else was done to it. no problems in function.

Don't currently have a Springfield in 257 Roberts, but I do have one in 7X57 that is absolutely "slippery" feeding.

Like Jeffe and Dago, I've never used anything but the factory metal configuration on the 7X57 case. I've examined several Griffin & Howe Springfields in both calibers......they were unchanged also. I think it's one of the reasons the two cartridges were popular Springfield offerings from G&H.

I had one in 25-06 that wouldn't feed. I put in a Mauser follower and it fed like a dream.

Just curious.....

What dimension on a 25-06 cartridge would give trouble feeding in an action designed for the 30-06?

If the follower was at fault, I would have thought a replacement Springfield follower would be a logical step.

For what cartridge was the Mauser replacement designed?

Grandview,
I guess I should have been more specific.

A few years ago I had a O3A3 that wouldn't feed. I really can't remember what it did but rounds never went where I wanted them to go. After reading here about trying different followers when having feeding problems I went and got the only extra follower I had. It happened to be one from a VZ-24. After that I never had any problems. I sold the rifle to a friend and it still feeds great.
