Had a mix-up with a barrel order a couple months ago and it was just resolved with the sales dept, my conversations were with Woody back in Novenber, but apparently Woody is no longer with Lothar Walther anymore. A John McBrayer was able to find my barrels and get things resolved. Just a FYI.

Wow, he couldn't have been fired. He's been giving lousy customer service there for way too long for it to matter now.

I have yet to receive a Lothar Walther barrel. Every single customer that has ordered one has canceled the order after months of apparent lies. Or mis information. Or whatever you want to call it.

Maybe someday I will get to try one of their barrels.

Hopefully this will be a step in the right direction

No one in the barrel industry has been able to keep up with my custom orders and contours except DOUGLAS,. Period. And I have used them all, put up with their snobby attitudes and long delivery times. I have many horror stories but I won't mention names.
I often have need for other than off the rack contours.
Stan Taylor at Douglas is super friendly to deal with, knows how to make super quality barrels, and has very fast delivery, even on custom orders. And they shoot great. I have used Douglas for 40 years, and for many years now, do not use any others.

When dealing with people that want my money I don't put up with bad attitudes and bad service. There is lot of competition out there.

Here's another vote of confidence for Douglas Barrels. Stan and the other folks at Douglas are what all companies should be when it comes to customer service. They're combination of quality, availability and price make them my first choice always. And they're calendar is readable from anywhere in my shop!

I live about ten miles from Douglas. It's a small business and there's a good chance that the company president is sitting there with Stan when you order. Across from Stan's desk are recently fired 1,000 yard sample targets that Stan fired.

It's always fascinating the things you learn sitting around those guys. But I don't go there often because it might hold up your barrels. Wink

Boy, this is an eye-opener for me. I had no idea Lothar Walther was so messed up. I and/or my gunsmith have bought barrels from Douglas, Badger, Pac-Nor, Siskiyou Barrel Works (RIP Chick) and Shilen. They have all been good, but my experience is super skinny compared to DPCD's.

So Woody hasn't had a chance to abuse you?
Talked to Woody several years ago. He was wondering why more competition shooters don't use their product. I said why not single out 2-3 winning shooters and give them a couple barrels. He said "I've done that before and they claimed to be shooting other barrels"! I said that all that I knew they were doing was to send a kid to a shoot in the mid to late 1990s to show us how it was done. The kid promptly told us how we were going to get beat. He was 33rd out of 35 shooters and didn't show up for the rest of the match on Sunday. This was in Houston, Texas.
He can be an ass if you didn't agree with him.

I had ordered a couple of barrels from one Canadian maker to avoid the wait time and because it was a small company. The barrels shot OK for the very first few rounds and then melted like butter.Asked why the barrels only lasted a quarter of the life of my Krieger's my smith replied that the maker makes barrels almost exclusively for the bench rest crowd and the barrels do not get hot so the steel used.I want a barrel that shoots tight groups for a very long time and is not much affected by heat.Krieger's are fine but I will always look for something better.

We did a big import to Australia through Lilja and Dan's people sent 2/3rds of the barrels the wrong contour, wrong caliber, and wrong twist. Was over a $5000 order.

Bernie Madco makes a good barrel, but couldn't bother to answer the phone.

So off we went to America.

Benchmark has saved they day.

Barrel businesses have been f'd up since obama got into office.

They were either too scared to grow to meet demand, or produced shit to meet demand, or fucked up orders to meet demand.

My understanding is that stockmakers McMillan and Manners finally figured out how to build their business sizes to accomidate the ration of custom rifle building that happened while obama was in office.

I for one never had anything but great experiences with Woody and his service was second to none, I dealt with him for years at the time when we could buy barrels direct without import permits.

That's about Woody, as far as Lothar Walther Barrels are concerned they are excellent barrels of the highest quality and offer contours and calibers nobody else makes.

My 9.3X64 Brenneke wears an LW barrel. Great barrel. Very accurate and on the easy to clean side. After my one dealing with Woody, I never bought another LW barrel.

I do really like the contours they offer and hope this is the turning point.

My money usually goes to Douglas. As noted, they seem to always have what I need and are timely. That said, X-Caliber has done well for me recently.

You guys realize that I sell the original Oberndorf Sporter contour barrels, CNC turned from Douglas blanks. I took the contour from original barrels. Also I have FN sporter contour. Over 24 AR members have them, all with complete success.

The last Douglas barrel I used was a 30 cal a customer supplied. The finish ream was extremely rough before rifling, and there must have been a start/stop type chatter as the button was pulled. It looked terrible but the customer wanted to use it anyway so I cast several laps and lapped the bore. It felt like I was pulling it through a washboard and I was unable to clean it up even close to not feeling it. That said, it shot very well (300 mag), couldn't tell you about fouling as I didn't get that feedback. Just one example, but it wasn't a good impression. I have used a few besides that one and they have always shot as well as hoped.

Nothing shameless about it.

Prices? Availability? Do you have the information listed somewhere?

I did not know that.

Kreiger and Brux used to be my go to places. Last Kreiger order was quoted 6 months. We are currently 6 weeks pasted the delivery date. Took 4 phone calls and two voicemails to get a response that the barrel wasn't ready yet and would hopefully be ready in a few weeks.

I use a lot of Brux, but I just stop by and see what Norman has laying about...there's usually extra in every batch and they shoot as well as any barrel out there. Muller works is another one I use a lot of.

Agree!! I have had excellent results and service from Benchmark over the last 10+ years. You can often find popular contours and calibers in stock at a couple distributors, and customs order take 3-4 months tops. Benchmark built me my screamer 1k BR rifle that I used ten years ago. I have several other barrels from them as well.

Matt if you got a rough Douglas barrel that would be the first one they ever made; I would have called Stan and let them look at it; I have never seen a Douglas with any reamer marks at all;

Here is my 1930 Oberndorf pattern; .650 muzzle. 25 inches long. Many here on AR have had very good results with these in 9.3mm. They are $285.

My Douglas barrel had reamer marks clearly visible in the bore from the muzzle end.I have read that they do not finish lap there barrels so this is normal.Just do a google searche on Douglas barrels and you will see that they are many who have said that there were reamer marks in their Douglas barrels.I think there about the only manufacturer of which you here about this.

I have used LW barrels for 40 years, Never had one bit of trouble with Woody or LW..other than long drawn out conversations, he was a talker, but he always served me well..Not to mention that I believe LW barrels are the best of the lot..

Now that does not mean that I don't like Douglas, Krieger, or other barrels, just that I prefer LW barrels..

My latest 7x57 project, a G33-40, 7x57 with all the bells n whistles fwt. has a Douglas no. 1 FWT 22" barrel, Im building it for myself, Belks doing the metal and Im doing the wood..Ive never kept a rifle I built, always sold them, this time Im keeping this one..I been hunting with left overs all my life, good guns but a little on the over used rough side.

Most do, they have to be lapped out, either before rifling or after. After the final ream, there are reamer marks on all barrels, some lap them out or hone them, some don't. After pulling a button through an un-lapped bore, you will certainly still see them, they're just 'ironed or flattened' in.

And to say that would be the first ever is a bit naive IMO, especially from a maker that doesn't lap their barrels. I am certainly not saying they don't shoot, every one I've used has shot very well.

If a maker uses a dull reamer, or runs it too fast, yes, the marks will be left after buttoning.

Although I have little knowledge on how to make a barrel it is my understanding that tooling marks are left after the bore is rifled. Those tooling marks are then lapped out by most barrel makers.

Whoever is handling LW orders now is doing a pretty good job. I emailed 3 barrel makers, LW got back to me first, gave me an 8 week quote on my order, then emailed again to say if I could live with a slightly heavier contour I'd have my barrel by the end of the week. They kept their word and my .423 barrel is in hand. I actually had all that figured out, done, paid for and a shipping receipt before McGowen even emailed me back.

I got my 5130 Type "E" Mauser barrel in .423" in four days! They just happened to have made a run of them. It won't always be that fast, I know, but the service was great. For target barrels, I keep an eye on various places like Brunos, Sinclair, and 6mmAR. I can usually find a .224, 6mm, 6.5mmm, or .308 Bartlein or Krieger in stock.

That is a nice looking barrel. May have to do a 9.3x62 on down the road.

Talked recently with them about another and what a difference!
