What do you guys think would be involved in converting a 3006 Ruger Hawkeye to 9.3 X 62. I would like to use the existing stock. Who would you have do the work.

Thanks JC

It's a simple barrel swap.

I would think that bedding of the stock would be in order do to increased recoil. Would you add a recoil lug on the barrel and what barrel would you use? I would like to make this a very nice working gun with open sites from NECG.

Thanks JC

Asking barrel around here is asking ford or chevy.

Since it is a huntng rifle any number would be fine.
Douglas Itd is hard to beat

Too Manytools and any number of smiths on here could install another choice.

McGowan, montana, Pac Nor.

Sure bedding is a good idea. You sure don't need cross pin or barrel lugs for a 9.3x62,,

Heck I run my 400PDK 400grs at 2265 in a Hogue.

Paul is right; you don't really need another recoil lug for that cartridge. Just swap the barrel and make sure the bedding is proper and you're in business. I like Douglas premium barrels but there are lots of other nice ones.

Toomany Tools (John Farner) built a Ruger M77 MKII in .264WM for me last year. It's one of the most accurate rifles in my safe. The work is top notch and John was great to work with. The job was done on time and the price was fair.

I normally lean towards blued steel and wood but this one was purpose built to hunt muddy fields and take long shots. So far it's 4 for 4. Cool

Its a rebarrel .. no need for a recoil lug, as the ruger bolt-in system is great .. bed it, wrist pin, go hunting

The ideal is to build a great 22" barreled rifle with opened sights. I sure like the old basic rifles I see here from time to time. Well built working rifle on Mauser actions but no old Mausers for us Southpaws. The Hawkeye African LH is great but I prefer to stay with a more classic round. The 375 H&H would be by first choice but a local store has a 3006 with a stock that I like so the 9.3 seems to be a great second choice.

Thanks guys. JC

Jeffe, why do you feel a 9.3x62 needs a wrist pin? Or is it something you just usually do?

It takes me 10 minutes to put in a wrist pin, when I am bedding. I've broken 2 stocks (nothign to cry over, jsut really annoying at the time) that if I had put a pin in them, they would NOT have been an issue ... on a 257bob and a 300wsm .. Like I said, just annoying, not a huge failure ..

There IS risk .. you can drill outside the lines .. which SUCKS.

In terms of recoil? nah, doesn't need it .. and in a ruger, probably doesn't need to be bedded .. but I like the do it one aspect of it.. it takes X hours to do a proper bedding job .. 10 more minutes makes me feel better.

Not sure if I have the right name but I sure like the old 9.3 that belonged to Elsa Johnson. I would like to have a modern version and the Hawkeye seems like a good way to come close without spending a fortune.

ITD will stick a barrel on the ruger chambered ready to go for $220. Plus bluing and sights if you want them.

I've used ITD to supply and chamber then TooManytools to blue and install sights.

Sorry I was confusing two thread.

ITD Custom Guns.

Yes that is furnish, chamber, install a Douglas barrel in std calibers on non metric actions. Small extra fee for metric. Other charges extra such as sights action work etc. I have had them short chamber barrels with my reamers and have been happy.
