Thoughts on the Enfield 1917 factory safety?

I've been delaying building two big bores on some 1917 actions until I got get a 3 position safety, but I've been waiting since fall of 2010 and the latest monthly update was now July.

So, any reason not to stick with the factory safety? And if I do that, maybe the factory bolt as well? I have straightened bottom metals on both, but went ahead and got Duane's magnum bottom metal - just to pretty and functional not to. So, given the nice bottom metal, I an hesitant to stick with the factory bolt and safety.

Thoughts?

Go with whatever you like better.

Personally, I like a Mod 70 3POS safety as that is what most of my rifles have. If it were my rifle(s) I would go with the three position.

That said, I think the Enfield is one of the best safeties.

Hi,

I'm with JBrown and like the M-70 3 position safety. With that said I feel the gaping hole left from removing the original safety needs addressing. The dog-leg bolt, also. Just not a fan of the looks. You might check out Ed Lapour's work and safeties for streamlining the Enfields. Google Ed LaPour Gunsmithing.

I love the stock safety .. and have fitted the mentioned 3pos .. i prefer the stock, and reverted...

as for the dogleg.. i've done em both.. i just leave em, these days

Ed LaPour is redesigning his Enfield 3POS safety. He indicated to me that it would be sometime before he finished up and made more. I scrounged a bunch of pieces and Toomany Tools pieced together my 3 pos.

I've been in contact with Ed since last fall.

I do like the straight bolt that many folks use.

A lot of folks recommended the factory safety as well. In fact, I'm sticking with the factory safety on my 1916 M98 build. So why not the Enfield?

I guess a 3-pos is the upscale thing to do on a full blown custom with all the other bells and whistles but I kept the factory safety on all my modified Remington Model 30s because they just work so well, scoped or not.


"Experience" is the only class you take where the exam comes before the lesson.

I love the safety hate the bolt handle. The only downside on the safety is that it takes a good smith to leave it on and still make the finish product, stock specifically, look good. That said, I'd like to see enfield safeties on every rifle I have, I much prefer them to everything else.

Some say leave the bolt handle, aside from being ugly they get in my way, but to each their own. It's definitely 2nd in ugliness only to the "ears" on the bridge. Go with a straight one with a nice orbendorf or burgess knob, looks loads better.

Don, I'm really dense. I think he said, but I forgot. He did kinda indicate that he wasn't in a hurry. I was very lucky I think. I have a Rem 30 Express with the factory safety and a 1917 in 450 Ackley that has the factory safety.

I like the factory safety, not a fan of the bolt handle. The only thing I don't like about the factory safety though is it kind of messes with the lines of the stock - like a chunk of wood is missing from it.

The redesign was going to ease manufacturing and include a new firing pin as well.
