hi, I have a 257 rob barrel which has the front sight screw hole all the way through. Can I just put a screw in and cut off the head? Dave when in rome, punt

yes.....you can do that but I sure wouldn't recommend it! You can also just leave it open too...kinda like a one hole break!.....and I wouldn't recommend that either.... I urge you to shorten the barrel enough to remove the hole.....and attach the front sight the right way next time. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Heck, I kinda like the one hole break idea...

ok, I'll shorten it but that would take off about 2 1/2". How wolud that affect my velocity in fps? Dave ( this is how I recieved the barrel). when in rome, punt

The trimming's effect on MV will depend on how much barrel you'll have AFTER. With the 257 Roberts, you will not lose a lot, regardless ...... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

It is an a&b 257 rob-21" factory barrel. This trimming back would only give about 18" to 18 1/2" long .Dave when in rome, punt

Personally, I don't care for carbine-length .257R's. I'd carefully plug it and see how it shoots; you can always cut it short & recrown later. Bud W

Personally, I wouldn't waste any time on that barrel. But, since you already own it you have nothing to loose by shortening the barrel and recrowning. If it doesn;t perform the way you want, you can at least sell it in good conscience. Best of luck.

I would put in a screw plug and try it before doing anything. ARe the female threads pretty good? If so, then it will hold fine. Will likely foul after the hole, but hey, you have no more money in it. Try it and see how she does.

And as how to plug it, either use the sight ramp screw or use a headless plug screw, such as comes in scope base holes on factory rifles.

hi marc, there was a screw in it already. the screw does'nt go into the lands when bottomed out. I was thinking if I kept the barrel to just loc-tite the screw in place and cut off the head. Whataya think? Dave when in rome, punt

I would just leave the front sight on and not worry about the loctite and see how it shoots. If you do not want the sight, then I would go ahead and loctite in one of the little plug screws I mentioned earlier. There is nothing wrong with cutting off the head of a screw and peening it over. YOu can then file it down and make it barely visible. I doubt if the extra hole will have much if any effect on it.

Well, sorry to hear that... shortening your bob to that length would be kind of funny.. in terms of a fireball.. does the rifle shoot well? most of those trashy AB barrels have an annoying habit of being great shooters .. try it and see, and let us know
other than being heavy for calibers, i still have trouble with all the ab barrel haters.... they always shoot bad... Yes, I see that, you missed the bullseye entirely, and the third bullet seems to have missed the target, lol. I also see that you do not understand my perspective. While you may be satisfied with the A&B results, and yes, many do shoot good, I could not take the chance. You see, there is a big difference when you are a professional. You cannot gamble that the barrel will perform when you are getting paid an hourly wage. My experience was about 50/50 at best. That was too many not so good shooters or worse, serious foulers. If you are doing the work yourself and it fails to perform then all you are out is the $80 the barrel cost. When doing this for a living comebacks due to poor materials costs you money, lot's of it. From a business perspective it was a no brainer to stick with premium barrels. My customers were much happier and so was I.

thanks folks. Ithink I'll just put loctite and screwin since the rifle will have a scope on it. Although, It anyones intersted. I'ld sell the barrel, dies, bullets and brass real cheap if this doesn't work out. Dave when in rome, punt

Dave, You'll most likely be fine but I wouldn't worry too much about using an 18 1/2" bbl on a Bob. You will still best .250 Savage performance and I doubt you'd notice any loss of performance in the field.

While I could be talked into an AB for a big bore minute of HOG (or water jug) I would not chance it on a small bore varmint rifle. While I'm sure there are plenty of examples of success. The actual cost of the barrel is a small part of the project. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

FWIW it will cost someone as much to attach a 18 1/2" A&B barrel to their action as a new one....maybe more if the smith has to time the cartridge stamping correctly....given that the cost of a new barrel is about $90 plus installation and the used one still has all the installation cost, it's very likely that the short "Bob" barrel will be extremely difficult to sell.....you might try for $20 and thank the guy that takes it off your hands. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
