I've got a New Haven Classic Compact rifle that I adore. The trigger is pretty bad...over 6lbs and I have the two nuts screwed to the bottom of their range and the screw is as far out as I can make it without moving it so far as to push it beyond its threads. Its also a little creepy with a noticeable bump in the pull... Permissable to stone the mating surfaces or no? (Obviously don't change the angles) In any case...I'm guessing at this point I need a new lighter spring to replace the factory original? Also, does anyone make blued socket torx/hex head action screws for a model 70 any more? I googled it and got nada except NECG makes a stainless set. Sure miss B-square... Thanks in advance for any help.

I find that most of those series rifles triggers have excess engagement which is the source of creep you feel. Stoning can improve the smoothness but doesn’t get rid of the drag time. I use my surface grinder to reduce the engagement, keeping the surfaces squared. A lighter wire coil spring on the trigger can help reduce WOP but often isn’t necessary after the engagement is improved. John Farner If you haven't, please join the NRA!

I used one of these https://www.mcarbo.com/winches...gger-spring-kit.aspx. It, with some judicious stoning, helped quite a bit.

Jon, I played with the overtravel adjustment a little and that helped some but as you mentioned its got a lot of travel before it breaks.

I saw that....its a little too light for my taste on a hunting rifle

I have never had a Model 70 that couldn't be brought to 3 pounds with the factory parts; albeit sometimes the sear engagement is too much like yours; then stone that smaller. Make sure it will hold if you drop it. I use a plastic hammer, or big chunk of wood and smack it. Not the trigger. And I own and have owned at least 12, and have worked on, many of them.

They are great little rifles aren't they! Nice and light and easy to carry.

Add a sear engagement screw. Now fully adjustable. ![]()
