Wow! Great skills, but all that was to shorten it 1/2 inch? I could use a mag spacer and a shorter follower and achieve the same thing.

I want to see somebody lengthen one. Have a long case without removing metal from the bolt lug engagement area. I know, there are plenty of 98s firing full length H&H and longer cases. “Need’s got nothin’ to do with it”.

Seems like years ago I read an article and the Smith took two M-98 actions, cut them to different lengths to build one long action(375) and one short action, I think for a pair of rifles... Very impressive!

If you have it, could you tell me which one? I would buy a copy of that.

This is a huge waste of time and money; only for the very rich, or the skilled casual tinkerer. But I talk to people who think a half inch of rifle length is super critical. In their world I guess it is. Fantasy world.
And then you have to make the stock....
I'll dig out an article on it.

I have a shortened 1910 mex action. It just fits a 375 Forsberg aka 375x 308-1 1/2"
I have a pattern stock made up. I need to get it copied sometime.

I often wondered if that could be done, determining where to cut one and cut the other to get a Kurtz and a magnum...

For those of you that are "very rich" we have "Kurz" length firing pins and extractors in process (2025) for the Mexican Mauser and plan to *someday* produce a Mexican "Kurz" bottom metal.

I have found the Mexican is the *easiest* to shorten.

In the book The Gun Digest Book of Riflesmithing, on page 113 is a detailed 23 page article on how to cut the middle out of a Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 and instantly turn it into scrap steel. Which they now make all these years later.
Lots of pictures on his tooling, fixtures and methods. Same principle as cutting up a Mauser.
On the question; Can you take two Mauser actions and make one short and one long action out of them? No. The part you removed from the short one is the thumb cut for the clip loading. You can't use that piece to weld into another action to make it longer. If you used an action without a thumb cut, then it would work. Or make a piece to fill in both of your thumb cuts. A lot more welding.
He didn't weld the bolt; he turned a shank on it, bored out the other side, and soldered and pinned it together.

On my wwebsite I show a good and pratical reason to go through the trouble of shoetening an action

It Was a terribly bubba'd G 33-40..Now a light weight 250 Savage sporter And yes, the method of joining the bolt balves together is what I use, except I delete the pin.

A 1917 Enfield with a P14 bolt would be a lot easier and still look good.
