Is the Jap Type 38 action strong enough to handle the 264 Mag? If not, what about the 6.5-06AI?

The action should be strong enough. Based on the reports you hear from people trying to blow them up. They will handle loads that the springfield and 98 couldn't. I'm unsure as to the modifications needed besides the bolt face.

Is the action long enough? I had one rebarreled to 6.5 Rem Mag many years ago, and it worked well.

If it wasnt for the cost of custom dies, I'd go with a 6.5/257 imp. Although considering how much work it would cost to get that action to accept a 264 or even an 06 length cartridge i'd go the above route.

I asked before I looked. The action isn't long enough for the 06 case. Then I had a better idea. Neck down a 308 case to 6.5. Brilliant! Then a friend burst my bubble. Said Remington has already been there. Calls it the .260 Rem.
