Hello.

Some of you may not know, but I own the factory tooling for the Winchester 88 / 100 magazines.

We are currently in the process of making NEW 358 magazines for the Model 88.

In order to do this properly I need some input regarding what ammo is used in these rifles. Now that it appears that Winchester has dropped this amo, most people will be reloading, If they were not before.
This information is needed so we can check the function of the magazine and follower before we offer them for public sale.

Basically I need to know what is the most commonly used bullet, if is a roundnose 200 grain, or a spitzer 225 grain.

We hope to have these magazines available some time the middle of the summer.

Thank you.

Jim,
the bullets i have loaded the most are
225 spbt sierra gamekings
250rn hornady
158gr JHP hornady pistol

then 180gr and 200gr..

i've tried noslers, which seem to be popular, ]and barnes..

Long and short of it is, if it will feed a 250gr RN AND a 158 JHP, it will feed anything

I believe that Winchester has not totally dropped the .358, but does make ammo on a "seasonal" basis. I guess they decide what constitutes seasonal. From what I have heard, they just did up a batch of .358 ammo, but usually, that stuff disappears fast.

I dunno if this will help or not, but I have a Browning BLR in .358 Win. and the follower of the magazine is marked "for .243-.308 and .358 Win."

IIRC, the 200 gr. and 250 gr. factory ammo was the same length, but I no longer have any 250 gr. factory ammo. The last .358 ammo I saw was at a gun show and they were asking $35 a box and they had only two boxes. I passed on them. Might have been a mistake, but if they still have them at the next show, I might go for it.

It worse comes to worse and you can't find any factory ammo, I do have a good supply of new unfired brass. I could make up a few dummies with either the 250 gr. Hornady round nose or a Lyman cast bullet. Either one would be very close in shape to the Winchester bullet. I figure that if they feed in my BLR, they should work in your magazines.

Jim,

I owned a 358 for years. The most popular and practical in my mind was the 225 grn spitzer. This is what I loaded the most.

The reason I chose the 225's was the following.

The 250s were just a little too low in velocity for me, 2300 is about max given most guns are going to be 20-22" bbls and not 24".

The 200 doesn't make much sesnse. If I am shooting something that I need a 358 for I probaly need a bullet heavier than 200 grns and the little extra velocity does nothing for me.

The 225 grn Nosler partiton is just about perfect. The barnes is a little long and eats up some case capacity.

I could get an honest 2400 fps out of a 20" bbl. Sighted 2" high at 100 I was 1" low at 200 and about 6 inches low at 250.

If you're gonna shoot over 250 you probably aren't gonna be carrying a 358 win.

My 358 win with nosler 225's (which I sold) has taken pigs, cow elk, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, impala, and wharthog.

BTW, I think it is the perfect plains game cartridge.

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.
