I bought a M70 Express 458 Winchester Magnum NIB and was wanting to have it rechambered to the lott, what would that cost???
Plus are you better off to rechamber the barrel to 2.80 or 2.85.

Thanks
Steve

It's not a simple matter of deepening the chamber. One must also lengthen the magazine and futs with all the things that allow the longer cartridge to feed thru the action. I've never done it but believe it's a very doable thing.

I'm seriously considering converting my 338 magnum M-70 to .375 H&H and it'll need the same work done to the action.

I'll hazard a guess that the conversion will run about $500

Steve,
might be the way to go.. sell and get a lott.. after all, you would have the risk of a reblue if the smith puts it on his lathe... and a risk of a bad chamber if done by hand..

he thing has to change the mag box, open the rear of the action (depending-- but would then require a reblue) re-time the ejection, and generally do quite a bit of work and take on risk to complete the job, much less have a reamer.

let's break it out
$20 (reamer amortization)
$175 5 @$35/hour labor
$50 5@$10/hour machine time
$30 winchester parts

leaves the man 25 bucks "profit" over his shop costs... pretty slim

and if a reblue is required, that's at least 100

Thanks for breaking it down, when people mention rechambering the 458 win into a lott it sounds easier then it really is.

Steve,
for me, the rechamber myself was a question I answered and then "got the bug"... so, to save that 300-500 bucks LOL.. i've probably spent 20 times that in tools, tooling, and setup!!!

LOL

Actually, there is not that much involved (in the half dozen I have seen done here)with a M70. First thing, check your magazine box for oal compatability. Several 7mm Rem Mags have been rebarrelled by a shop in Boise, to 11lb 458Lotts with no work required except a reamer run in and headspaced. I took the easy route and bought a Manchester Whitworth in 458WM and had it rechambered.

I took my M70 458 Wim Mag and pushed a 458 Lott down into the magazine and it went in with no problems however, the bolt would not pick up the lott and start it forward toward the barrel.
The rifle is a Safari classic, do you have any experince with this gun.
Thanks

Well I just double checked my magazine and I was wrong. The lott would not fit in the Magazine. Where can a person buy a magazine for the gun I descibed above, also it doesn't look to hard to replace the bolt stop. But how much is enough.

Thanks

Steve
