I just acquired a very clean Remington 30S Express in 30 Remington; factory, stock, Lyman 48, the works. I am considering having the rifle rebored to a more available caliber, 35 Whelen perhaps. Will a 30-06 based cartridge clean up a 30 Remington chamber?

If you rechamber a very clean mod 30 you will have lost several hundred dollars and screwed up a fine gun. Buy a 30/06 and sell the remington to someone that will care for it. Good luck

almost any 30caliber centerfire.. 300 savage and larger if the gun is in anything like decent condition, you will be destroying the inherent value of the rifle -- very uncommon caliber in a pretty nicely uncommon receiver ... if the gun, heck, if just the metal, is intact, you are making a $400 gun out of a 1200 dollar one opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Thanks guys, having done more research last night after putting up my post I've decided to keep it a 30 Remington. Not only for value reasons, but also because with the checkered steel buttplate I don't relish the thought of any recoil above the 30-30 power level it appears the 30 Remington was designed to produce. I also think I have a relatively rare gun. It is a Model 30S action and barrel (barrel has ramped front sight and no rear sight doughnut) but a Model 30 stock (slender grip, schnabel forend) that has had the barrel doughnut inletting filled with thin wooden shims.

My 30SR (Redfield rear sight) has a different stock style than yours but also has the wood shims where the barrel doughnut will be. It's a .35 Rem but it's already been altered with the pad so I'm thinking of rechambering to a .35 Whelen. If it had the original butt I would leave it alone. If your .30 Rem is all original leave it alone. Anything but a 30-06 goes for over $1000 these days.

Jeff, Ballistically they are twins. Though the reloading manuals will list data as the same for both, the .30 Rem is not just a .30-30 sans rim. Case dimensions differ. Me, I'd leave the rifle as-is, buy a bunch of cases, and shoot it til the barrel wears out. Then you'll have all the excuse you need to rebarrel. Aut vincere aut mori

Too nice to alter, use it and keep it clean or sell it and get what you want.

I've got cases on the way, and it'll be hunted on good weather days this deer season. It's a neat rifle and I'll hold onto it long enough to get a feel for it and then I'll likely move it. I want a Model 30S for conversion to 9.3x62 or 35 Whelen and this one deserves to stay complete.

Oregon45, don't let these backward looking naysayers stand in the way of progress. A 30-06 AI would work nicely. Also, there's nothing wrong with that rifle a Dremel tool and some 50 grit sandpaper wouldn't fix right up. Drill, baby, drill... ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Maybe fit it for gloss aluminum weaver bases with see-through rings?
