I recently picked up a 1903A3 Springfield in 35 Whelen AI. Upon taking the barreled action out of the stock I discovered the following stamped on the bottom of the shank on the barrel.

1-16
360

Now 1-16 makes some sense to me as I assume it means 1 in 16 twist. But, 360 is a bit more puzzling. Any ideas?

Many thanks

Seems most likely to be the groove diameter of the barrel. A little oversized but probably not uncommon. Regards, Bill.

Thanks for the reply Bill. Seeing as how this is 360 rather than 358 could this could possibly indicate the barrel was rebored at one time? It is not a particularly heavy barrel for a 35 caliber.
