I had seen this picture before. It is hard to imagine what would cause this much damage short of a case full of C-4.

The analysis is quite interesting. As a matter of historical note "burned steel" is why low number Springfield rifle receivers are suspect.

I believe this is where they say the barrel failed and that is why the gun blew up. (The link came from a post about a rifle that had blown up.)

When examining any failure it's good to remember that IF the cartride case head is still there...the failure was a result of a bad barrel. If the case head is gone, it was a result of high pressure, improper ammo, excess headspace, etc.
