Gun Broke in half and Another Question...

Well yesterday my brother got my gun out of his truck, and I here this WHACK!!! The sling screw stripped out of the stock and the barrel slammed into the concrete busting my 7mm in half... Complete accident, but I was a little distraught

My question is this: I have the chance to buy a used gun with a little less than 250 rounds through it. Where does that stand on the scale of barrel's life? Does it have a healthy life ahead or is it on its last legs?

Seth, a gun with 250 rounds through it should be just fine unless of course it is on of the super duper Mags and even then it should be ok. I have several guns that have a couple thousand rounds through them and they are still very good shooters. If it is in the class with the ultra mags or STW's give it a good looking over.

Now I don't know if I want it. Can I shoot regular 30/06 through this or just the Ackley Improved cartridge?

Remington 700 7mm Magnum.

It broke in half right at the closest part of the action to the butt.

My father-in-law gave it to me a while back so I don't know anything about a warranty or what not.

Any comments on the Ackley Improved -v- Springfield? Are they interchangeable? I need to know so I can tell this guy. I don't want some kind on a wildcat gun.

Seth, if I am reading this right, you are saying the stock itself broke and not any of the metal.

If that's the case, lots of used wood stocks are available and just a matter of getting your gun re-crowned and maybe a bluing touch up.

If the AI was done correctly you should be able to load and shoot factory 30.06 ammunition in it.

you can try gun parts corporation/numrich for a stock, too. I found one I needed there.

I bought a remington stock new from remington last year, another on ebay

or get a synthetic- that way you could give it back to your brother with a clean conscience

you're looking at owning two rifles, here- always better than owning one

Seth,

Do you reload? If no, then definately pass on the '06AI. Remember you'll need new dies for it. Nothing wrong with another gun, but you might want to get a new stock and then you don't have the urgency to get something else right away.

Unless of course if you are married, then you need to get the new gun and wait a couple months before you discover that you can fix your old one!

OK well there's only 99 Remington 700 stocks listed on Ebay today

And if you're patient you could find BDL bottom metal too.

So for probably $100 total you get a new stock with a floorplate.

And then get a pair of Remington 700 Bedding Pillars and some Acraglas gel from Brownells and you're in better shape than before.

2- 264s, one a shot out POS that wouldn't make book.. douglas barrel on a mauser.. it was rebarreled to 300 win later...

other, a NICE pre64 that a friend of mine liked way more than me, and made me a nice deal on a polytech m14 (m1a) that was MOA with a scope... I liked the 14, he liked the winchester. do a serach under my name and polytech and I am certain you'll find a picture of it here...

of course, jimmy, we haven't established the FIRST time i've discussed items that you feel I didn't have expereince with... and, to your utter shame, you have been proven wrong to the point of tediusness

#1 a NECG RUGER peep sight, that I knocked the sharp corners off and didn't get around to bluing (the weather here has SUCKED for a month)

btw, it RATTLES (like every other NECG ruger sight) when you loosen the apature... and if you pull UP on it, it moves at least .025, without the apature tightened... just like every other RUGER NECG sight.

#2 - here's a high level pic of a couple cold and rust blue containers that I have used over the years..that i have "no experience" with.... the oxpho is probably 2 years old, and is the newest... I couldn't find a BC blue... must have run out and not bothered to replace that stinky crap

old toothbrush that didn't get thrown away last time I had these out... oh well

#3 - perhaps a better view of the bluing agents

#4 bluing and ruger sight in the same picture

#5 "non-existent" crown .. as presented in the first post about it, as done by huntingcat. that someone was so new that they missed that reference and picked a squabble over it speaks VOLUMES for their true character

#6 close up of the same - sorry it's blurry, but anyone that can read this post can see it's internally RADIUSED with a "non-existent" tool... (yet I posted links to simular tools available from VALENITE.. but FYJ says V doesn't make small radius tools)

#7, oh, a picture of a group shot by this AB barrel, with the non-existent crown, in 416 AR ... shooting 400gr as about 2500FPS
(yes, it's really 3 shots, FYJ)

in retrospect, perhaps "pointing out" portions of the pictures was overkill.

Now, I would like to see some pictures of FYJ's comments... perhaps a picture of him at his board of directors meeting, and some of his work...

after all, i have a WEBSITE full of pictures showing my stuff...

could someone please, now, tell me what "acpected" means?

Bubba, let me set you straight, I have 10 264's and two of them have close to 1000 rounds down the tube and both still shoot as good as ever. They will hold right at 1" @ 100 yards. Don't believe everything you read jeffe, not everything is fact even though you post as fact.

I am still awaiting your aopology

I just gotta but in here,
there is so much more to shooting out a rifle barrel then the cartridge its chamberd for. and any given number of rounds down the bore.
If you shoot a screamer like a .257 weatherby , or a .264 you need to be a little more carfull.
i see lots of .257 weatherby ultrta lights. so i will use that as an example. If you shoot a round or 2 and let it cool and mabye even clean it before shooting again it will last alot longer than if you were to shoot 50 rounds in a session over say half an hour to an hour, repeatedly.
another factor is bullet weight. if you shoot heavy bullets you will have less velocity (les friction) and a smaller powder charge, and mabye a faster burning powder so more of the powder burns in the case than down the bore.
Clearly ultra fast small bore powder burners are tougher on barrels than other rounds. I have seen guys at the range shooting 100 rounds through a rifle prety fast , thats got shorten the life of the barrel than the same hundred rouns fired slowly no matter what round is being fired.....tj3006

TJ, your post is what I was talking about. There are several of the fast boomers in my safe and they are all tack drivers but they are well cared for and as you said, don't heat them up.
Besides, who is really going to use a large magnum to shoot a 100 rounds at one sitting,not me
