I need some advice. Is it practical to re-bore a 270 barrel to 30-06 ? And who could do the work ?

I want to keep the barrel as is. It has folding leaf express sights machined onto the barrel, I would like to keep these sights but want a 30-06 as opposed to a 270..............JJ

If you have fixed sights (machined integral to the barrel) the only way to salvage the barrel is to rebore it. I've never done it but from what I've read it costs about the same as a new barrel.....You will have the problem of erasing the .270 stamp and engraving the .30-06 stamp but it can be done with a little creativity. Personally I'd plan on removing a thread and rechambering to adjust headspace but it may not be needed. I have a friend that can cut new rifling and I'll ask him if he wants to do it . There aren't a lot of folks that do it as the cost is high.

Maybe someone will come up with a name for you.

Why not have one of the better barrelmakers spin you up a one-off copy? I advise a Krieger. You can then put the sight on the new one exactly where you want it and you'll have a zero-time barrel. Of course, you'll then want to get it pillar-bedded and glas-bedded and the whole nine yards...

Hi Mr. Miller,
We can rebore your project if you cannot find anyone else set up to do it. Our charge for a straight rebore (you re-crown and do chamber mods) is $135 + s&h. If we crown and recut neck and throat..$285 + s&h, and we require the barreled action as we need to proof-fire all chamber work. This is, as suggested below, assuming headspace is correct.
We are the shop that now run Cliff LaBounty's equipment. Let us know if we can be of assistance.

JJ It is quite practical to have this done. There is enough difference between a .270 and an .06 that the .270 will clean up completely before it is rerifled to .308".

The cost of a rebore job rarely is any more than a new barrel. The main objection is that good rebore guys have a couple years' worth of work waiting in line at most times! There are usually good rebore gunsmiths in/around the Prescott AZ area, and in WA as well - here's one to check out. I hear he does great work. Rebored barrels are of course, "new", and quite often shoot better than they did before reboring! http://www.cutrifle.com
