Ruger Magnum actions

I was reading in the current issue of "Rifle" magazine that the Ruger magnum action is 7/16 inches longer than the standard action.

What is not clear to me is whether the longer (magnum) action was utilized for cartridges like the 7mm Rem Magnum or 338 Win Magnum...both of which can readily be fit in standard size bolt actions (of any commercial action).

The "magnum" action was of course utilized for cartridges like the 300 H&H, 375 H&H, 416 Rigby, etc.
(I was surprised to learn from Ruger that they never chambered the 300 Weatherby Magnum)

I am speaking now of both the earlier tang-safety models (push-feed), and the later CRF models.

Anyone know the answer?

Thanks,
Garrett

308 length and down, "short". longer "LONG",

the RSM is a fish of another color. It's longer and wider, though it was barreled to 270, 30-06, 375, 416, and 458 lott.

There's a bunch of confusion about what ruger calls the "magnum" and the long, in that sometimes the "long" is called the magnum.

there is also the 77/22, and 77/44, which is totally different than the above.

I know my 300 win mag, tang model is a standard long action, as is my 338 MkII. Neither one would fit a long cartridge like a 375 etc.

The ruger magnum action is specifically designed and chambered to handle the 375 H&h, 416 RIGBY, and 458 lott. This is the best shooting factory rifle I've ever owned. I also know 2 other people with these rifles and we have all had the same results.

I don't know if the action is longer or just the mag box. You can easily convert the normal mag to long mag just like you can convert the normal mag M70 to long. You can take the 375 box and with only a little stock opening it will fit in the normal Mag action. Then shorten the bolt stop. Nice way to make a lite 375.

Hello,
I own couple of the Ruger Magnum Deluxe Rifles and the action is longer than the std. '06 length action and is slightly wider as well. The 375 and the 458 Lott have more than ample room for those cartridges in all areas. Rifles are a bit on the heavy side, but not for the calibers mentioned and the function of rifle, feed, smoothness is top drawer or at least on the two that I have. Excellent rifle for the money in today's market of inflated prices for firearms. I would guess the word is value for the dollar spent.

The one in the article is an RSM which is made for cartridges up to .416 Rigby and .458 Lott. It is longer wider and a lot heavier. The 7mm and .338 is the same length as a .30-06 action.

I juest reread the finn aagard rsm article friday night..

he is describing the RSM ruger safari magnum...

this WAS available, with the identical barrel contour, from 270 to 458lott, rigby inclusive, and very long.

it overlapped the regular action in 270 and 300 win, to be clear that they aren't exclusive.

the "long" m77 action, either tang or otherwise, can be made to take the lott.

Jeff,

If I am reading you right you are saying that the Ruger Express rifle (M77EXP) used the exact action and barrel that come on the RSM. This is not true. The Express rifles definitely used the standard length M77 action, albiet with the top of the action matted like the RSM. The barrel was of much lighter profile and the quarter rib only had one standing and one folding sight leaf whereas the RSM has one standing and two folding. I had one in .30-06 for a while but it didn't do much for me so it went on its way. Come to think of it my RSM doesn't do much for me anymore either..

Of interest, I guess, to this topic is a Ruger marketing brochure I picked up at the RMEF convention when it was last here in Denver. 2000 I beleive. In it Ruger was suppossedly comming out with a line of magnum rifles based on the RSM action but without the integral barrel and circassian stock. These were to be available in 7 STW, .338 Rum, .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, and .458 Lott. The literature called these the Ruger Large Action Rifles. The ruger guys had a few working examples at their display as well. Too bad they never brought these to market..
