I just purchased a clean receiver from the old gunshop in our little city. It has the words Mauser roll stamped on the receiver ring and the ser.# is C165xx. It had an 8MM barrel that was pitted and I chenked it. Is this a good receiver for a custom? Is it a later model receiver? Suprisingly the bolt is tight in the race ways when pulled toward the back of the receiver. It was missing the cocking piece and the safety. Any information would be appreciated. Butch

butch, it's a paperweight, i'll come pick it up so you don't have to clutter your desk... it's a mauser banner action, which can make it a desirable action, and perhaps a commerical, if it's really tight... i don't know the "postal" mauser SNs, but I believe those also are mauser banner actions. what is the shape of the bolt handle? sporter? straight? "roll" bent? send me some pics and I'll post... opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Jeff, Photos are on the way. Just pics of the stripped receiver. The bolt handle is straight. It has a different # on it. No erosion on the bolt face. I thought that it had a little lug set back, but after cleaning it was gummy grease. I'm going to clean it up and put it into the safe for a future project. I am committed to a 7x57 on the Mexican at this time. One at a time is all I can afford. Butch

It's a keeper! Now, get some polishing stones and polish that receiver well. Do not drill and tap over the banner! Jason "Chance favors the prepared mind."

Is there anything stamped on the left side of the reciever? Could it be a Model 1933 Standard Modell Carbine?

Yes I believe that is what it is. It was made for China by the Mauser Co. The Little stamp ahead of the SN looks like the Nationalist Chinese seal. (twelve pointed star enclosed by a circle). I am getting this from Mauser Bolt Rifles by Ludwig Olson, page 181-184

From "Handbook of Military Rifle Marks 1866-1950". Emblem of the Republic of China stamped on both sides of receiver ring, right chamber, and right rear buttstock of a Mauser made Standard Modell rifle. Emblem designed personally by Dr. Sun Yat Sen, founder Rep. of China.

I seem to recall China bought some Mauser rifles on the cheap ,they were apparently built using out of spec reject parts in the mid to late 30s. for the life of me I can't recall where I read it ,It may have been a book by Albert Speer. It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack; not rationality.

My book mentions that China made a copy of the standard modell that was sub par. They were marked completely different though. It mentions nothing about the German built rifles being better or worse than any other German built rifle.
