I'm curious about the question and why it's asked. Do you have an issue with the Ruger safety, and if so, could you define the problem and/or tell us why you would want to replace the OEM safety designed specifically for the RSM?

My comment was a bit brief. While I'm growing fond of this rifle, it needs a little work to make it mine. I'm taking it to Mozambique, the Zambize Delta, this fall for two buffalo.
Ruger gave me a good piece of wood, but it desperately needs a nip and tuck. The bottom of the stock is a bit proud and floor plate release is prevented from engaging as the front trigger guard screw draws the guard to bottom on the magazine and the floor plate is blocked by wood. A little trimming there will take care. It has a very very smooth action, feeds well and has a decent trigger. I purchased the rifle new from Champlin and had them install a good Pachmayr pad. I've used Warne QD rings on other rifles, but find them tedious on the re-install and sent it off to NECG for EAW mounts. The scope is a Leupold VXR, 1.25x4, I love its big, bright picture. At 30mm though, my little finger doesn't have much purchase as it draws the bolt back along side the scope tube. Rugers bolts are the shortest I've used. I'll turn off the original knob, thread and install a tear drop knob and gain 4 or 5 tenths in length. Lastly, the safety. In the lock position, the angle is just too sharp for comfortable release. My rifle rack has several old model 70, and the other rifle for this trip is one, a .375 H&H. If no replacement is available, I'll focus on adding to the thumb piece and reshaping it. Short question, long answer. I'm a CPA, and need distractions this time of year. Thanks for your comments.

Patrick,

Welcome to AR, and yes, I can tell you are an accountant. Big Grin

Could you possibly be over-thinking the rifle? I have a RSM .458Lott that has made my last two safaris and taken Lion, Buff and Ele. Here are the mods I made to my rifle.

Replace the front sight with the NECG white bead.
Replace the recoil pad with a 1" LimbSaver.
Install a Timney Trigger.
Polish the rails & ramp to chamber flat nosed CEB bullets.

I have used both a Burris FastFire II red dot on Ele and a Leupold 30mm 1.5-5x illuminated circle-dot reticle on Lion and numerous Buff.

As to the floor plate issue, are you tightening the front trigger guard screw first? Stock screws should be tightened in this order:
1. Front floorplate screw - the one that pulls the action into the stock.
2. The rear trigger guard screw.
3. The front trigger guard screw.
If you do not know the ft/inch pounds for these screws (I don't recall them now) phone Ruger and ask. Use a torque wrench on them to ensure they are tightened to the standard. It is very easy to over tighten the front trigger guard screw and this will cause problems with the floor plate release. BTW, I have never found a situation where it was necessary to release the floor plate on safari.

I would suggest some extensive practice using dummy rounds will solve any issues you have with working the bolt around your scope. It's not a problem for any RSM users I know of. As to the safety - same thing, practice using it and you won't have an issue.

Hope this helps and good luck on your safari. The RSM is actually one of the better built safari specific rifles. Ruger just went cheap on the POS recoil pad and front sight.
