no one?

well, i contacted "black-oxide.com" and they were rather annoying that I would actually ask them to honor their "email for a sample kit" posted on their website.

Hmm, perhaps a written review of these products is in order, with replies for "opting out" should be included.

What the heck I sent an e-mail for my free sample kit too. I will say it looks easy in picture with the 5 gallon buckets.

We'll see what happens?

bluetick, Bill,
i loved their response that they are aimed for "professionals".. and their kit is 2 metal and some plastic 5 gallon buckets. A benchtop solution if i have ever heard of one.. .and not one I would accept as "professional" unless is said "wagner" on the side (WHAT A JOKE)

The caswell does have a milspec... but then again, so does the omelette MRE, so what does that mean?

btw, is the omelette MRE qualified as a weapon of individual intestinal destruction?

Talked with Billy on this.. I've ordered the caswell kit....

Here's my thoughts...
50 bucks, so what? give it a whirl

2 joints of 4" pvc and caps cost next to nothing

a rifle is a fairly slim object... i bet it can be immersed in that type of "tank" pretty easy.

cutting those joints to about 4' make fairly handy storage tanks...

i spoke with caswell, and got a good laugh when i asked "does it stink" to which i was answered "like coldblue... NO... 99% of any smell is the oil.... no no bad smell"

"does it change dimensions? " "no, just like hot blue"

So, i figure if it doesn't make a dark, tough finish, i'll put a trickle charge on the action (thanks bob) and microboil it at the surface. As it's a chemical reaction, extothermic, additional energy SHOULD drive to a more complete reaction/speed it up... Boom?

The most common theme on using these products is both "it MUST be subemerged" and "bead blast it"... okay, both of these i LIKE

Did you get the 2.5 gallon kit? How much or how many parts can be blackened before it is no longer any good. I'm thinking the 1.25 gallon kit would last me a while.

Seeing how I just got a tank today (stainless, hope thats not a bad idea) to try and start rust bluing. This stuff would be great for smaller parts.

Used this stuff, or similar, a few years back for parts we didn't have time to send out for hot blacking. I found that rather than messing with all the cleaning and rinsing it worked just as good cleaning the parts with MEK or Acetone then straight into the blacking solution. Always wear gloves 'cos the grease off your hands is enough to screw the process up. Another thing I found was "roughing up" the surfaces slightly with fine emery helped the blacking take better.

IMO neither the finish or corrosion protection is as good as you'll get from hot process.

Yea, that’s about my luck I'll never hear nothing from 'em at all. Let us know if you actually get the stuff. That’s all right though. I'm right in the middle of rust bluing my first barrel. I just carded off the first time. It looks pretty good. It isn’t with out fault but it looks ok. Who knows for $40 maybe I’ll order some of the Caswell stuff. 11/4 gallon will probably last me years.

Here's what I got this morning....

Thank you for your interest in the Insta-Blak 333 trial kit. We have had a problem with our web site administration and certain information was incorrectly deleted and changed. Specifically, we have always posted throughout our web-site that our products are for industrial and commercial use only (we do not sell or ship our products to homes or to home users because of the hazardous nature of these chemicals). This information was removed and we are in the process of putting it back on the site. You may wish to contact Caswell Plating as they sell small quantities of these products and also sell to hobbyists and home users. Their phone number is 315-946-1213 or e-mail mike@caswellplating.com. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Ah, BULLSHIT

if it's bad stuff, triple-eythel-death, then why tell us to buy it elsewhere.

Reply back to her that IT IS NOT ON YOUR WEBSITE NOW and you must honor your conditions.

As conditions and settings of a website are EXACTLY the same as a mismarked price, they must honor it, in the state of texas.

Heh, in fact, I bought about 21 zebco 202's with poles for a quarter once, just to prove a point.

I did, i kinda like it.. it DOES NOT STINK!!!!
the penetrating oil, which smells like gunsheath (that always sounds naughty to me), is 99% of the odor.

it's pretty even in finish... as even as I finished my 2 test cases.. a scrap barrel and a magbox (not scrap)

The black isn't as dark as I would like, so I've got a couple options, 2 suggested on the package.. heat the metal or warm the solution... the third, which I WILL do, is to hook it up to a trickle charger and let it microboil by inductance (sp)

i will then try a slightly stronger concentration!

i bought a joint of sch 40 4" pvc, cut it in half, put a cap on one end (each) and a cleanout drain on the other... when i order some more oil, I might put it in the second tank, but for now, it's a "one tank" system.

so,
70 bucks for the 2 pints black and 2 pints oil, including shipping
45 bucks for two tanks...

is it "professional" HELL NO, not by these two, but might be better when I heat it up some.

is it FAR better than coldblue? without a doubt, ANY cold blue... i can't stand the stink.. and i bet animals can smell that for miles.

from 1 to 10, 10 being best
10 - pro rust blue
9 pro hot blue
7 GREAT teflon job
6 hotwater blue (see 2 below, too)
5 this stuff
3 any "paints" that I have tried.. baked em, boiled em, sprayed em on... sounds like a bakery..
2 "plum brown" ... but that looks GREAT as a "hot water blue" btw

-5 cold blue

more to come

okay, now we are on to WEAR testing, as I got GREAT results after beadblasting.. will try sand blasting tonight.

1: acetone degrease
2: beadblast
3: dunk for ~15-20 mins
4: rinse with hose
5: dunk in oil
6: let sit overnight and oil dry

looks great.. DARK, "sharkskin"...

hope it wears for anything
